: My night with President Bush
HAD TO SHARE THIS WITH ALL YOU'LLs
Oh. My. Goodness.
What a night!
Regardless of whom you are voting for this November, please just indulge me for a few minutes to tell you what an incredible night we just had!
Saturday night, I got a call from one of the people I've helped with the Bush campaign. He said there was going to be a special picnic with a special guest and invited my family to come, swearing us to secrecy because if word got out too soon, it would be cancelled or moved for security reasons. Monday, we got another call with our instructions ! of wher! e to go, what to bring, what to wear, etc. By then, the secret was out - President Bush was coming to a small picnic and softball game with about 300 supporters, and would be introducing the First Lady via satellite from the picnic.
Tonight, we arrived at the Carlisle Fairgrounds and boarded busses to take us to the park in N. Middleton township. We were shown to one of 5 areas and told to stay in our area and the President would make his way to each of us if we were patient. We were in the pavilion, eating picnic food, when he arrived. We were told to treat it like a wedding - when the bride and groom come around, don't get up and rush them with cameras, autographs, etc. - just wait your turn and he'll come to you. Sure enough, he went up and down the center of the pavilion, shook hands and exchanged greetings with each one of us, (including myself, Ed, and the 3 boys), followed by Sen. McCain, who was traveling with him. At one poi! nt, m! y 8 year old son Michael (a HUGE Bush fan who wants to be President himself someday) wandered over to where he was standing, posing for some pictures with some other kids. He told him "If I could vote, I'd be voting for you," and GWB put his arm around him and pulled him into an affectionate headlock, and stood there for a minute with him like that before joking, "Hmmm, I guess there's some stuff I'm supposed to be doing, huh?" and moving on.
For the next little while, we saw him visit the other areas and play a little softball. Then he did his introduction of Mrs. Bush and we all sat on our blankets on the grass to watch her speech with him. Michael asked me, "Hey, can I go sit next to the President?" I was about to say no, when I saw he was sitting just a few feet away from us on the grass. I told him he could if he didn't get in the way and he went and plopped himself down right next to GWB! As if that weren't enough, our 19 month old,! Kyl! e, toddled over to sit with Michael for a few minutes and when he got up to toddle away, GWB said, "Come here, buddy," and Kyle toddled right over to him and sat on his lap and the two of them sat and watched the speech together for a few minutes before he got up and toddled away! Needless to say, we were a little distracted from Laura's speech for a few minutes as we were snapping pictures and taking video! (5 year old Ethan, at that point, was curled up under a blanket nearby, having had his fill for the evening - the handshake was plenty enough for him.)
After the speech, he got up and thanked us all in a very personal way for the work we were doing, and gave a heartfelt little speech of his own about what he wanted to talk about Thursday night. He was so warm and personable and comfortable with himself and with all of us - it really was an incredible experience to be hanging out with the "Leader of the Free World" in such a casual! ! way like we were all good friends. He was truly in his element.
Anyway, I just needed to share this experience while I'm still basking in it - thanks for indulging me! I'll let you know when I have the pictures developed and scanned - the White House photographer was there too, so some of the kids might wind up on the White House website - I'll let you know.

I LOVED your story. Thanks for sharing it! Can't wait to see the pictures! Way to go!
So Bush went on Chris Matthews show then?
Oh wait, he doesn't suck up when they have an R in front of their name, never mind. If Bush did go on that show, he wouldn't be able to finish his sentences and get accused of Smearing Kerry for saying he flip flops.
Wow!What a wonderful experience for your family.Hurry and get those pictures posted!
Ping !
I watched the President introduce Laura last night and I saw the batter behind him swinging at some pitches. All I could think of was the President of the free world being beaned by a screaming foul ball....
But....all went very well.....whew!........
Now you know why I love him so much.
WOW!!!!!
Now THIS IS TOO COOL!!!!!!!!!!!!
How lucky can you get!!!!! I'm so looking forward to pictures!!!!
That is so cool!!
bttt
Great story. Great man. Headline needs to be changed as I thought it was that it was going to blast Bush for playing political softball!?!. But then I remembered his introduction, etc.
Many thanks for your wonderful story. Every time I hear of a personal encounter with W, I become more convinced that my impressions of him are right on target.
Loved the story. Thanks for posting it!
Ya gotta read this PING!
Thank you for sharing this incredibly warm and personal story. Some time in the future, could you post at least one of your pictures? I'd love to see your children w/President Bush!
