Rich Lowry just said the same thing, that he came across as angry... He's not the only one, and he's VERY conservative.

Of course Zell is angry, and he has a right to be!

Sheesh! He's been a Democrat his whole life, he still is a Democrat, he is the *current senior Senator of Georgia* and he's right P*SSED at what his party has become around him. You're damned right he's angry, and the point is that Democrats who feel as he does about this country should be mad as hell, too! This is what we should be saying: yes, Zell *is* angry, and with good reason!

That's because he was angry. His passion and anger are what made the speech so effective. He was not talking about a bond issue for a school, he was talking about war and the security of his family. He is angry that the Dems don't have the judgment to prosecute the war against terror and call our soldiers occupiers instead of liberators.

I note that you DID NOT address my point. You said:

AND I QUOTE: "I'm as conservative as they come... I'm basing my views partly on how the media have taken numerous GOP (primarily Bush) speeches and events

I say to you AGAIN, most conservatives don't base their views the media. But you apparently do. I WONDER WHY?

But there is a place for anger. Zell was like the grandpa who occassionally raises his voice to succintly set you straight when he thinks you aren't grasping the seriousness of the situation. And most of us listen to that grandpa, and it is impactful, far more so than the 'timeouts', negotiating, and pleading of our parents that we become somewhat numb to.

I am not sure this is the bad thing you think it to be. I mean how is a person suppose to act when they feel that their party, that they have been part of all their life has betrayed everything it use to stand for and is on the verge of being treasonous to the country you love and are suppose to be serving.

Don't you think he would have looked strange dressing down his party at the other party's convention all smiles and cute jokes? If he had been a Republican dressing down the dems then yes he would have been over the top, but he was not. He was a "dem til death" dressing down his party for its disloyalty to the troops and country in a time of war endorsing the other party's presidential candidate, and that could only be done in a dead serious way. Otherwise he would have looked disingenuous.
