Trouble on the campaign trail. A bad day to be a Kerry supporter.
Best of the web | August 31, 2004 | James Taranto

James Taranto of Best of the Web found this entry on the Democratic Underground website:

“I had a horrible experience canvassing today. We went out canvassing Democrats today to ask them to support Kerry and our local candidates. We were in apartment complexes and lower middle class housing. The young Democrats living there told us they were voting for Bush! We even met a young marine who said he was just back from Iraq and supports the war, which is why he is voting for Bush. These people have nothing and they are the ones Bush is hurting the most, and yet they support him. And they are registered Dems and young. Why is this happening. I thought our base was solid. This is very frightening. We walked for five hours and only met two people who supported Kerry on our Democratic list! What does this mean?”

I'm afraid to believe this. Sounds like a setup to supress Republican turnout.

1. It won't work. Not with Kerry in the opposing slot.

2. If you're worried, make sure your local Republicans turn out! Drag them if necessary.

I should've become a psychiatrist, they are certainly going to be very busy for the next four years.

I have only seen two Obama signs, no Kerry signs. Granted, this county went 80-20 for Bush in '00, so my sample sucks, but I'm still sensing something out of whack.

Brings to mind a conversation from the other night...an Air Force buddy who lives in the same Blue county in Maine that I bailed out of after High School. He says he has been asking people for weeks and has not found one Kerry voter. He's a business owner, so he's mingling with a wide range of folks, and there's nothing there. Few to no yard signs, too.

Oh, and look at the first response in the thread: the guy uses a quote from a Jimmy Carter speech as his tagline! I love it! These people smoke crack!

And you know how it is...liberals do therapy, conservatives either do prayin', beer, or both at various exclusive intervals.

Check post 73 in that DU thread. Guy says, that the GOP platform is...

Affirm that we are a GW Bush Christian Nation. Extend the Death Penalty to Rape. Ban ALL Abortions Privatize Social Security Phase out all Government payments. Repeal the Minimum Wage Prohibit regulation of Private Schools and use vouchers to fund them use this device to bankrupt public education. Criminalize Homosexuality and include it in the Death Penalty group. Oppose the Endangered Species Act.

Wow. They even lie to each other. Or they believe this tinfoil crap, and that's why they hate Bush so much.

Having worked on many campaigns doing canvassing, I think the problem is that they had a bad day on the campaign trail.

If the same reaction happens more frequently, then I'd say there's a big problem with their base voters.

But it does appear as though they had nothing more than a bad day of campaigning.

I think the tide is in Bush's favor. I expect a win large enough to prevent a bunch of recount BS like last time.

Something written on DU is meant to supress Republican turnout? How does that happen, exactly?

It's not really from DU. It's a poll intended to show that Bush will win in a landslide, so it won't matter if we don't show up to vote.
