Girl, if that storm somehow changes course and starts heading for us, we're packing our bags, and the cat, and getting the hell out of here. That's a monster of a storm, and I'm not going to sit in my house through something like that. Where's the best place to head, though? Probably south and west.

The Weather Channel and Accuweather are both in a tough position. They basically can't afford to be wrong, lest being accused of putting people in harm's way (the Government's weather center, you see, isn't accountable -- but the private sector is!). They best they can really do is suggest that "THIS IS THE OFFICIAL TRACK, but we kinda think this is another possibility to consider (said in a low voice).

That's unfortunately the reality of the situation. I would much rather see some real analysis, debate, and educated conjecture. I think there's a lot of merit and even marketing in that. But in 20 years, the Weather Channel hasn't even dared broach that.

Yeah, I sympathize with you being at the end of the road.... literally. Most people can't even appreciate just how far it really is down there. If you're gonna leave, you should be leaving NOW, since you've gotta get to at least Tampa... and then maybe further (or back home!).

We are staying put. If there were even an inkling of a chance of us needing to evacuate, they would have started it already. If we have to evacuate tomorrow (which I doubt), I will fly to Ohio and let my 4 month old get spoiled by the in-laws. There's just nowhere good to go by car. We're probably the least in the path right now compared to the rest of the state.

Yes! But it's that "low voice" that grabs my attention, and makes me think...hummm?

Accuweather, the Hurricane Center, and even the Weather Channel are hinting that a Carolinas solution is still possible. The last Discussion page suggested some healthy respect for the GFDL and GFS models, which have been consistently pointing that way for 2-3 days. They were joined this afternoon by the European model.

Here's the theory: Frances approaches the Florida coast - somewhere in the West Palm-to-Melbourne area - but stays 100 miles +/- off shore. THEN IT STALLS, maybe for a DAY or more while awaiting steering currents to push Frances .... somewhere. Most likely (in this scenario), the push is northerly, with a landfall somewhere from mid-Georgia to mid-S. Carolina.

This is also a VERY bad scenario for Florida (coastal flooding; heavy rains, winds, etc.) if the coastal approach is ANY closer than 100 miles. It'll be bad enough if this option comes to pass anyway.

For right now, the NHC still is leaning away from that plan.
