Thanks for posting this. My 8yo son and I just had a great conversation on exactly what free speech means. We watched it together with the sound turned down. He also thinks it's pretty dumb to be protesting for "peace" but then use violence and vulgar language to try and achieve it. Yes, my 8 yo figured that out on his own. So much for wisdom coming with age, huh?

Sadly, I think that you are correct. Far from the intent of Mrs. Rand and her philosophy, the incompetent have seized on the myth of 'strike' to justify their indolence. Rand used the idea of the strike to demonstrate the folly of the tool of the incompetent, to show what really happens to civilization when the competent and the creators that normally buttress the existence of fools, withdraw their support.

I have spoken with Anarchists and fringe Leftists who refuse to 'cooperate' in the 'unjust' contemporary manifestation of Western Civilization. Of course, that is their prerogative. They claim to withdraw something that we need, thinking that their brute force, and voluntary ignorance is of unique value. Isolating their existence from our lives would be a favor. But, that is not, of course, what they do. They do not simply refuse to participate, the become sucking leaches withdrawing the economic essence of the life of freedom while delivering the viral infection of their destructive nihilistic pestilence to others.

There is a movement in France dedicated to this very idea. Reading Atlas Shrugged, one might actually be forced to conclude that the 50 year old American Classic was not prognosticative; much to Ayn Rand's chagrin, it was a guide book to the crucification of Men... by vermin.

Perhaps it's just overloaded with FReepers at the moment. ..Or so I hope, anyway.

Definitely keep lots of cameras rolling, video and still; I'm frankly a little surprised they didn't try to grab / destroy those too.
You'll need all the evidence you can get if things get too out of hand and you need to press charges or seek restitution from one of these thugs.
Without hard evidence I would expect Judges etc. to take an anarchist's word over a "conservative's", wouldn't you?

From the PW's description, it almost seems that they were perhaps having just a little bit too much fun and could have strayed somewhat into the fringes of "provocation".

Not an excuse for the abuse, certainly, but I can see why the NYPD pulled them out in order to defuse the situation, as well as for their own protection. Back when I was in that sort of business I probably would have done the same thing.

If the LEOs assign any group a specific location, yet they later take the liberty of straying from that area, the sympathies of the LEO personell might be a little compromised toward such errant factions.
Although I wasn't there, it almost seems that that might be just what happened here.

I would expect most of these wannabe hippies who make up the "Protestors" to be about 3/4 stoned - at least - and wound up tighter than a nine-day clock by their anarchist handlers. So it probably won't take too much getting in their faces and antagonizing them, as much fun as that might be, to provoke some kind of outburst.

Now if anyone wants to do that (as they obviously don't have any problem doing to others) by all means have at - but do so with an understanding of the inherent risks involved.
PLEASE don't include anyone under 18 in such forays, and always leave yourselves an avenue of escape. If you get a small group seperated from the PD and your allies and surrounded, things could get really ugly before the Law can get in and bail you out.

Although most of these usefull idiots are just as Rush describes them, "Human debris" more interested in the exitement and concurrent party scene, these affairs usually attract a few really bad actors who relish the opportunity to really hurt someone - or worse - with the anonymity and impunity which a mob usually offers.

Back in the '60s some radical groups were know to import "professionals" some of whom we suspected may have had ties to the Soviet Empire, to mingle in with them, and a few Police officers were roughed up or even killed.

These "specialists" demonstrated a high level of sophistication in martial arts skills and hand-to-hand combat training; One Officer in a riot-control formation was shot with his own sidearm so quickly that his Comrades could not react before the deed was done and the perp was gone.

In most instances the killers vanished back into the mob, which closed in tightly behind them, and were never identified or caught. What had appeared to be a random, milling mob suddenly transformed into a well coordinated and choreographed team. That phenomenon can be and has been a deadly surprise to more than a few Police Officers in the past. Hopefully the NYPD has studied their history and will be ready for them this time.

So keep up the good work, PW's; but please be careful, and keep track of one another.

My son and his fellow soldiers would have been more than happy to discuss the anarchists objections to Free Speech; in some secluded spot were there weren't any police to interfere with the discussion.
