Blackout! CBS Early Show Ignores Convention, Today and GMA Take Mild Swipes
The Early Show - CBS; Good Morning America; The Today Show

Posted on 08/31/2004 4:40:16 AM PDT by governsleastgovernsbest

As your intrepid reporter on liberal bias at the morning news shows, a thought was running through my mind as I watched last night's speeches by McCain and Giuliania: "these are so good, there is no way the morning shows can spin these as anything but a major blow to John Kerry."

Apparently the morning shows agreed, because to varying degrees they adopted the strategy that the best coverage was limited coverage, or in the absolutely mind-blowing case of CBS' Early Show, NO COVERAGE AT ALL!

OK, in fairness, there was some brief mention of the convention during the Early Show's news recap at the very top of the hour.

But when it came to the extended segments during the first half-hour, first up was a rehash of the Kobe Bryant case. Surely, I thought, the convention must be next. But no, it was an update on surgery on conjoined twins. "No, this can't be happening," I thought. "They must be building toward a big conclusion to the half-hour with a major convention segment."

Uh, no. The final segment was devoted to informing us that it was rainy in Richmond yesterday.

Over at the Today Show, rather than extended coverage of the convention, we were treated to the second installment of a near week-old interview that Matt Lauer had done with Pres. Bush. OK, not as bad as CBS' Richmond weather report, but the big news of yesterday was what happened in the convention, and we saw very little of it. Rather than any extended excerpts from the McCain/Giuliani speeches (and don't forget that NBC did not broadcast the convention last night), we were treated to another soporific interview between Katie and Tim Russert.

Finally, at GMA, Diane Sawyer conducted a live interview with First Lady Laura Bush. I must say that Laura looked absolutely beautiful and conducted herself with her characteristic charm and class. That was put to the test when Diane Sawyer crudely asked her "so, are you going to attack John Kerry tonight?" "Of course not," replied Laura, maintaining her good-natured composure as someone might when a visitor's dog soils the living room carpet.

Both Today and GMA focused of course on W's inelegant phrase yesterday regarding our ability to win the war on terrorism. Nice try, but that would only stick if people thought for a second that W wasn't tough on terrorism or that Kerry was tougher. Don't make me laugh.

I thought a clear highlight of last night's speeches was Giuliani's parody of Edwards' 'two Americas' theme, when Rudy suggested that perhaps Kerry needs two Americas: one to take one position, the other to take exactly the opposite position on the same issue. But of course none of the networks let Americans see that this morning.

All in all, an infuriating performance by the MSM. But let's take it as a compliment and a good sign: they know how devastating the McCain/Rudy one-two punch was last night, and didn't dare let the American people see too much of it this morning.

What was the coverage of the DNC? One/two hours EVERY night? I can't remember.

My mother just told me that Katie Couric is getting ready to interview Laura Bush.

I'd practically give my right arm to see Mrs. Bush haul off and whack Ms. Colic a good uppercut.

< sigh >

You probably don't remember a house # do you?

Oh goodness no. I'm not even sure the Indian Trail house was the first one they lived in when the moved from Midland to Tanglewood. Remember this was 38 years ago, but it seems to me the first house was south of Woodway not north. I went to High School with lots of kids from that area so I may well be mistaken, and thinking of anothers home.

I do remember that it was a one story with a long low roof and rather dark brick. All the family areas and the garage were on the right and the bedrooms were on the left, when facing the house.

Right now, the Dems message is, "there is no war." The GOP's message is, "there IS a war." Bush's statement, oddly, reaffirms the GOP message once again and counters the Dems message that we are in a 9/10 world

Put in THAT way, yes I agree with you!

In those elections, though, consider this: no Socialist alive could've beaten Reagan once , let alone twice; we lucked out with GHWB (my opinion) because Dukakis ran a lackluster campaign and was doomed; The Sheep voted William the Impeached into power twice, both times against decorated heroes of WW2; and GWB DID lose the nationwide popular vote (thank the Founding Fathers for their wisdom with the Electoral College!).

We've got two months until 02 NOV, and the Socialist Machine has not reached its highest gear. On other threads, I have predicted blood and fire in the streets. I really do hope I'm wrong, because I'd be one of the men on that picket line, armed against me fellow citizens.

Why are the networks in lockstep?

They all vote rat, they all go by the DNC talking points, they stopped being objective years ago, and they probably wouldn't have a job if they pretended to be objective. That's just for a start.

The house you describe is not the one in Indian Trail I am thinking was theirs but, like you say, they probably had several houses.

Thanks for the link.

As devastating as anything is Kerry's haughty Boston Brahmin accent. Gag me with a phony purple heart.

I'm a Fox watcher who watched the entire evening on C-Span (and we're a Nielson family). My dem husband was surprised that I watched C-Span (and taped it from there) instead of Fox. So I showed him the difference. In flipping around to show him what was going on the other channels instead of straight covereage, we paused for a moment on Aaron Brown of CNN. He called these wonderful speeches attacks. CNN has done more than I ever could to show my husband that there really IS media bias and that the Republicans really do have a better platform.

you really missed some great moments

The music alone was worth wading through the speeches. It was so inspirational and beautiful!

The Republican Convention is honoring ALL those who serve(d) in the military. Excellent presentation.

My husband, a democrat, commented on that. He was really hit with the difference.

I did the same. You get to see the things that even the cable nets ignore..I loved the three family members of the 9/11 victims. Finally, the GOP is telling the "jersey Girls" that they don't own the issue..<P
One thing surprised me last night.. Amazing Grace! was just awesome, but if just ONE person had started to sing along, the ENTIRE convention would have started singing ..It would have been an awesome moment..

I sat there in tears when it was sung. The words of that great song remind me of what this country is all about.
