(snip)
Perhaps the only way to incite real outrage among the good people of the commentariat and the think tanks, the column said, would be for Richard Mellon Scaife to give $10 million to a new right-wing group, which would then begin airing nonstop attacks on John Kerry no coordination with the Bush campaign, of course.
Turns out that was wrong. Today, there is real outrage, but it didnt take Scaife or anywhere near $10 million to make it happen. All it took was a group of Navy Swift boat veterans with a resentment of Kerry and $200,000 from a Texas supporter of George W. Bush.

Rumors are rampant that McCain is is setting himself
up to run for POTUS in 2008.

"Rumors are rampant that McCain is is setting himself up to run for POTUS in 2008." For which party?
Certainly not the Rs, without a very big fight.

I could be mistaken, but I think that all of these 527 ads become impermissible from 60 days to the election on, which is in about four days, so all this hubbub is going to die down pretty soon.

I agree with Byron York. This election cycle should prove
beyond a shadow of a doubt the wrong-headedness (let alone unconstitutionality)
of CFR, and Congress should act swiftly to repeal McCain Feingold.
No, I am not holding my breath. :)

The only solution is to repeal McCain Feingold! Sooner is better!

First of all, only those 527s that take corporate or union donations are affected. Second, those that do can still do "issue" advertising, provided they don't name candidates or parties. Name an issue that can't be discussed without actually naming the party or candidate. It's like saying you can't write porn without using the seven deadly words. Of course you can.
The law will have zero effect.

John McCain is a dangerous man for a number of reasons beyond the above stated one.
To: MamaLucci
Rumors are rampant that McCain is is setting himself up to run for POTUS in 2008. And if McCain is to be successful, he has to find a way to stifle the critics.
To: js1138
OK. It seems to me though that it's going to be pretty difficult to do the ads without actually naming one of the candidates.
I'm a free speech guy anyway, so I don't think there should be any restrictions at all on the ads.

The SwiftVets can say anything they want because they don't take corporate or uninon donations.

Senator McCain's health problems will not permit him to run in 4 more years. He's not getting any younger either-he'll be 72 in '08. Just an opinion, of course.

The POW ad was devastating. O'Neil alluded to a "surprise" or "somethinging coming" in Sept./Oct. re:Swift Boat info. Could it be the Coup de Grace' for JF Kerry?

Senator McCain's health problems will not permit him to run in 4 more years. I can only hope that you're right. What health problems do you refer to? Mental health problems? If so, I think those will work toward seeing him run.
