This happened in Asheville, NC where the hippies and tree huggers have been fighting against the proposed Wal-Mart super center for years (link). Somone repeatedly drove a dumptruck trough the walls of the building under construction.
The article from WLOS:
Vandals hit the construction site of the Wal-Mart Supercenter on Swannanoa River Road overnight. Someone drove heavy construction equipment into the building, creating nearly one million dollars worth of damage.
The vandalism will push the opening of the controversial store back about a month. Workers say security around the site will be upgraded to prevent this sort of incident from happening again.
We had the anti-business hippies protesting near here when they built the Wal Mart in Athens, Oh. They protest any business that comes in - recently a new Lowes, but often successfully drive business away. Then the newspaper complains that under this Bush economy people can't find jobs - after they diligently work and drive jobs away! Then when the stores are completed, what goes in and out of the new stores all day? Hippies.
Yep, right next to the ammo.
I am not familiar with the situation in Asheville. However:
If heavy-handed bullying strategies, legal strategies, or any other techniques are used to steal property from people, decent people must oppose and stop it, whether it be done to further capitalist policies or "environmentalist" policies or anything else.
People should be aware of these injustices and refuse to tolerate them!
If the powerful decide to steal from you or to exploit you, they can find a strategy. If one thing doesn't work, they can think of something else.
"Environmental charities" are notorious for doing this. Some are funded by billions--that's BILLIONS--of dollars. They can afford to hire extremely intelligent lawyers and buy off powerful politicians. The average citizen is helpless when threatened by these organizations and the people who work for them.
Businesses that exploit people are no less onerous.
Such injustices are as evil as racial discrimination or any other evil, and they must not be tolerated.
Injustice is injustice.
I didn't say THIS Wal-Mart was using eminent domain to sieze the property. I said Wal-Mart has a reputation for doing so. Please pay attention.
So, the "Mom-n-Pop" grocery stores, hardware stores, clothing stores, etc., that are buried by Wal-Marts across the country are all run by hippies? You should probably rethink this position.
I do telecommunications engineering for a living. This involves extensive travel. I have worked in 48 states and 16 countries to date. I see the same thing, over and over. When a Wal-Mart comes into a small town before long what used to be "downtown", bustling with small shops, winds up becoming a ghost town. Well paying, entrepreneural jobs are lost to $7/hour Wal-Mart part time jobs. Many small communities across the country are starting to wake up and say no to Wal-Mart.
Keep shopping at Wal-Mart and do enjoy your cheap chineese goods. You will have no right to complain, though, when the job you cause to end is your own.
"Please pay attention."
Don't paint with such a broad brush and then get snippy about it.
Um, you are the one who posted a reply to me based on something I didn't write. It isn't painting with a "broad brush" when Wal-Mart is using eminent domain to seize property all over the friggin' country. I reserve the right to "get snippy" if I want to.
Don't be so sure until you know all the facts. We have 6 of Ohio's 8 hippie communes in our county. The people protesting were smelly, longhaired commie flag waving, WTO protesting hippies. I see the same ones each time there's a protest. They bitch about the fact that the f-ing stores will displace grasshoppers, and such. They incite people to refuse to pay income tax to buy bombs for Bush. I live here, I saw it, you didn't. The small business owners did not protest, although I'm sure they weren't happy abuot it. You should probably rethink this position. Don't ass-u-me. You know what they say. You can feel how you want about Wal-Mart and small business, but that has nothing to do with the human scum that constantly come out of the woodwork here. I know the facts of this instance. They are venemous, anti-Bush, anti-US hippies who then blame the lack of jobs on Bush. I'm not just tralking about Wal-Mart either, I'm talking about good, industrial, professional jobs like Honda US. They fight to keep ALL industry or business out. They are now working on a moratorium on NO more construction in the city. NO BUSINESS OR JOBS OF ANY kind allowed. One of the organizers of the Wal-Mart protest recently gave a seminar here to Anarchists from across the country. Look up anarchy - it is the violent overthrow of a government. Does he sound like a local hardware store owner, or a commie hippie?
I have never heard of Wal Mart coercing cities to use eminent domain...
I have heard of Costco trying to do so.
Any specifics would be appreciated.
Thanks.
Considering the thread topic was about the Asheville Wal-Mart you were remiss in not qualifying your broad brush statement and I was on target to tell you that was not the case with the Wal-Mart in question.
Keep acting stupid if you like. I'll ignore you for the rest of this thread.
Hippies Vs The Great Walmart of China. I do not know who I want to lose worse.
Four walls and a roof.
I have NO f-ing job now - mainly because these scum succeed in keeping ANY good-paying industry out of the county. I am a degreed professional, and now am planning on selling the family farm and moving to actually find ANY job. Don't attack me for buying cheap Chinese Wal-Mart crap until you know that I wasn't taking up for them, and may not even shop there. (I do, and I happen to like cheap crap). I was attacking our large population of resident Berkeley-style pukes. This county is the liberal CESSPOOL of Ohio. You cannot open the paper without seeing the ass-boils of the world. The small business owners mumbled justifiably over Wal-Mart, while the pukes made huge public asses of themselves. And they were NOT worried about the business owners. They work actively to keep this one of the largest welfare counties in Ohio.
Here's one local hippie's response to this:
"what does one do when America's goverments at all levels have been bought and corrupted by the most powerful companies and people in the country??
Vandelism sets the message " we don't want you here! ". Now whether they like it or not, that is the truth.
Everyone talks about the " 600 " jobs it will create. Create for whom? The non-english speaking hispanics in the area who have no rights to complain about the way they are treated to the labor dept?
Or maybe they will hire the pooriest of the poor in the area who would rather be working for lower than normal wages, have their health insurance cut in half than not to be employed at all.
Find me one ,just " 1 " employee at any of Wal-marts in the area that have a 4 year degree and aren't in managment that Wal-mart has truly helped the average american worker."
Terrorists should be shot on sight. ALL of them, towel heads or home grown.
The most important property right to Americans should be the right to own a weapon.
I was just out the door and this hit me. I am on my way to Puke town to see about my cell phone. Here is one that should be near and dear to your heart. Just TRY to put up a cell phone tower within 10 miles of Athens, Ohio. For that matter, try and build a driveway, put in a septic system, or take a healty dump, for that matter. These commies live on Government grants for teaching Africans how to grow organic okra, ect, and use the surplus to spew hate for the government, quash free trade, and generally work against all that is American. They fly all over the country to protest the WTO in WA, some went to Iraq as human shields. These people aren't worried about you. They want the stone age back. And you're siding with them. Maybe your opinon of free trade needs rethinking. You don't have to like Wal-Mart, but consider the American principles behind their right to exist.
