Polls show Swift boat dustup is hurting Kerry
WASHINGTON The presidential race remains a toss-up amid signs that a controversy over Sen. John Kerry's Vietnam service has hurt the Democrat, but not necessarily with lasting consequences.
Three polls released Thursday show that ads questioning Kerry's service as a Navy Swift boat officer in Vietnam have eroded some of the benefits gained from Vietnam imagery employed at the Democratic National Convention last month.
One poll, by the Los Angeles Times, showed President Bush gaining the lead for the first time. Another survey the Battleground 2004 poll by Republican pollster Ed Goeas and Democrat Celinda Lake had Kerry ahead. In both cases, the leader's advantage was within the margins of error.
The effect of the Vietnam ads wasn't likely to permanently damage Kerry or prove beneficial to Bush in the long term, analysts said.
The ads may have had their biggest impact with veterans, a majority of whom were predisposed to vote Republican.
The third poll, which focused on veterans, shows that while Kerry had made some gains with veterans after the convention, any improvement dissipated once the controversy over the ads erupted. It was conducted by the Annenberg Public Policy Center of the University of Pennsylvania.

Such news reporting! The no named "Analysts" clearly are the dregs of dregdom selected from DU and Move-On. Who knows? They could as well be the voices in the reporter's head.
You gotta ask yourself... WTF were they thinking?
The star has been taking a lot of heat over this story, considering they buried it in the saturday edition, it's hurting really bad.
The MSM is starting to sound like Hal singing "Daisy, daisy" in 2001.
Almost sad, but just bathetic, in fact.
Did you ever wonder if this is just a test run for hillary by the dems to see how far you can get a cadidate for president on nothing?
It is unlikely that this can be reversed since the trend toward Bush began right after the Democratic convention, even before the swift boat ads were aired. A softening of Kerry support in swing states was noted by Gallup weeks ago. Kerry was unable to gain any traction whatsoever since the Democrats left Boston. He's been headed downward ever since.
"All John Kerry needs to do is re-introduce himself to the American people and they will embrace him without reservation." MSM
Yeah, riiiiight.
The cretin colludes with our enemies to defeat the United States while he is in the U.S. Navy, causes the deaths of at least one million people in SE Asia after the Communists take over, untold violations of human rights and they call this a "Dustup"? Please don't insult our intelligence.
His fake silver star citation won't help his cause any. He had a silver star citation on his website with additional flowerly language and Navy Sec. Lehman's signature. However,, Former Sec. Lehman says, " ...I never saw it, I never signed it, I never approved it, And the additional language it contains was not written by me". This from the "Chicago Sun Times", linked from the Drudge Report
What is interesting about the citation mess and the medal garbage...is that in California or NY...it doesn't really matter. But in the heartland...where votes count in Ohio and Tennessee and Colorado...this mess does mean alot with regular voters. Its the heartland voters that will carry the entire race and decide the final outcome in the electoral college. Kerry should have kept the Vietnam business to the side and never pushed the subject (especially during the convention). If Bush has any big platform announcements or drops Cheny for Condessa...then the entire campaign goes into 4th gear overdrive, and Kerry is finished by mid-Oct.
