Kerry citation a 'total mystery' to ex-Navy chief

Former Navy Secretary John Lehman has no idea where a Silver Star citation displayed on Democratic presidential nominee John Kerry's campaign Web site came from, he said Friday. The citation appears over Lehman's signature.
"It is a total mystery to me. I never saw it. I never signed it. I never approved it. And the additional language it contains was not written by me," he said.
The additional language varied from the two previous citations, signed first by Adm. Elmo Zumwalt and then Adm. John Hyland, which themselves differ. The new material added in the Lehman citation reads in part: "By his brave actions, bold initiative, and unwavering devotion to duty, Lieutenant (jg) Kerry reflected great credit upon himself...."
Asked how the citation could have been executed over his signature without his knowledge, Lehman said: "I have no idea. I can only imagine they were signed by an autopen." The autopen is a device often used in the routine execution of executive documents in government.
Kerry senior adviser Michael Meehan could not be reached for comment on Kerry's records.

and the date you mention sounds correct.
Its not correct to refer to it as 'active duty' though is it?
Because he was in the RESERVES even when he 'won' his medals.

I think it could be deeper than that. This could well come down to leftists, "hard leftists and proud of it" and the vets and the rest who aren't proud they were duped (as you say). What resonates with many of us who came of age after Viet Nam are the parallels between the current war and its protesters and Kerry's lying before the Senate and meeting with Communists. Lying about medals is a Clinton like manipulation but providing aid and comfort to the enemy, lying before the people of this country at the expense of our military and turning our ideals and values (however wrongheaded the situation) to make us the enemy of freedom is unforgivable. And it most certainly is not a 30+ year old irrelevancy for a country at war.
The media has reluctantly covered Kerry's service exaggerations but the meat of this matter, for many of us, is what came after. They of course don't want to go there. They are largely made up of those whose world-view was shaped by Viet Nam. These are the same people who yelled quagmire one hour after we attacked the Taliban, these are the same people who find more truth in an atrocity or failure in Iraq than a success.
John Kerry has had almost his entire adult life to come to grips with his anti-war activities. His record shows us that he never did, he did not come to value our military strength, he did not come to denounce anti-American forces, he did not come to apologize for the harm he inflicted.

The two Lehman citations on Kerry's web sites bear signatures that are absolutely identical to each other (superimpose one on the other and they fit perfectly).
You might want to repost your article linked in my previous post again since I think it was on the old FR BETA system and may not come up in a site search.
Many mechanical typewriters were subtly unique. Unfortunately, carbon paper doesn't convey impressions all that well, and poor scans make things even worse, but I wonder if analysis of physical documents or high-resolution scans thereof would show that some documents were produced by Kerry's typewriter that, logically speaking, should not have been.

Burkett, author of "Stolen Valor" and recipient of the Army's highest award given to a civilian, the Distinguished Civilian Service Award. For his book, Mr. Burkett had to read thousands of military records to uncover phony claims of awards. "I've run across several claims for Silver Stars with combat 'V's, but they were all in fake records," he told Mr. Lipscomb.
Mr. and Mrs. Holzer bring up another interesting point. Over at JohnKerry.com, the Navy citation for Mr. Kerry's Silver Star does not mention the combat "V". It appears, then, that the Navy didn't mistakingly grant a "V" with Mr. Kerry's Silver Star. So, how did it get into Mr. Kerry's DD 214? .... ***

I gotta believe a re-signing of an unchanged routine document could be done with an autopen. A change would definitely require approvals.
