Dubya's Rebuttal
GOPUSA ^ | August 27, 2004 | Mike Bayham

Posted on 08/27/2004 6:29:39 AM PDT by Cincinatus' Wife

Since January, George W. Bush has weathered an all-out assault by the Left (media, Hollywood, Democrats, etc.) that has not been seen since the last days of Richard Nixon's presidency.

On the silver screen, the Bush Administration has been blasted overtly by the factually-challenged Michael Moore opus and "subliminally" through less obvious but every bit as adversarial portrayals in "The Day After Tomorrow" and "The Manchurian Candidate".

Bruce Springsteen has declared a performers' intifada against the President, which is being supported by a number of his fellow musicians. The NAACP has resurrected its post-2000 election accusations that the Bush-Cheney ticket stole the White House through intimidating black voters and stealing the ballots of those who were brave enough to make it past the legions of fictitious modern day Bull Conners.

The DNC began a spring offensive on Bush by accusing him of being AWOL while serving in the National Guard and having his father arrange for him to avoid a trip to Vietnam. Now that veterans disgusted with Kerry have returned fire by highlighting news accounts of his anti-war activities during the seventies, the apoplectic Democrats sanctimoniously condemn the President and his allies for misrepresenting well-documented statements made by the once anti-Vietnam War activist and current proud Vietnam Vet.

Not to be forgotten are those McCain-Feingold gremlins known as the 527s which have relentless shelled Bush for most of the year and have only recently caused the Kerry effort a moment of exasperation.

And finally, with the exception of a mild skirmish about supposed Botox treatments during the primaries, John Kerry has received almost exclusively positive news coverage upon emerging as the apparent Democratic nominee.

When considering all of these avenues of attacks against the President, is it any wonder why Bush's poll numbers have been lacking?

Nationally, John Kerry has led the President throughout the campaign, though the margins between the candidates have shifted from a significant deficit to within the margin of error. Another factor in determining the accuracy of the polls is if the field being questioned contains likely voters or apathetic buffoons who won't let something like a presidential election get in the way of feeding the ducks at the local park.

That factoring out lazy voters and felons not eligible to vote increases the GOP's standing in surveys speaks volumes about the Democratic core.

In the polls that truly matter, those being ones taken in the key battleground states, the President's underdog status is that much more reinforced. For example, according to polls cited in Joel Rosenberg's Flash-Traffic e-letter, Bush trailed Kerry by 6 points in Florida, 7 points in New Hampshire, and 3 points in Ohio. What is worrisome is that Bush carried all three in 2000 and needed them to nose Gore out by 2 electoral votes.

Worse yet, the pickings are rather slim in terms of trying to flip a Gore state over in 2004. In Pennsylvania, a state Bush was hell-bent on winning and lost handily, the President is behind by 5%. The news is more promising in Iowa, the sole blue state in the Midwest, where Bush is trailing Kerry by 2 points. The late Ronald Reagan was the last Republican to carry the Hawkeye State in 1984.

Though the issues that were hotly discussed before the conventions will still dominate the rhetoric of the candidates after the convention, some things will change, all of them in Bush's favor.

Number one, the public will start paying closer attention to the presidential election after Labor Day, 96 hours after the gavel for adjournment at the Republican National Convention. Because of the later venue, whatever bounce the President is expected to receive will pay bigger dividends than Kerry's convention belly flop.

Also with increased interest in the campaign, people will be taking a much closer look at Kerry, which is a bad thing if you are a Democrat. Most of the Democratic Senator's momentum could be attributed to his status as the leading "ABB" (Anybody But Bush) candidate, but there are undoubtedly many voters who might give the President another look upon examining Kerry's well-deserved reputation of taking three sides on a coin toss.

Third, the convention will mark the first time since his State of the Union address that President Bush will be able to address the American public via an unfiltered medium, in addition to two other prime-time slots to be allocated to high profile surrogates.

Finally, and most importantly, expect the protesters trying to reenact Chicago 1968 in Manhattan to be on their very worst behavior, conduct that will inevitably reflect poorly on John Kerry. When word reaches living rooms about how law-abiding delegates are being accosted, harassed, and assaulted through tossed pies or ink bombs by ravenous agitators determined to see Bush defeated, many voters on the fence will hold Kerry guilty by association.

The Republican National Convention could be the turning point Republicans are hoping that will propel the President into the general election with unstoppable momentum. While Bush will use this opportunity to shine, he might benefit from a double indemnity if his opponents, more blind with rage than usual, do something really stupid.

If Bush nails the political exacta this week of coming off strong and the protestors succeed in coming off obnoxious, Kerry could be in grave danger of following in the footsteps of his political mentor from his days as Lieutenant Governor (Dukakis) instead of his hero (JFK).

Good article, and I pretty much agree with the premise, except that most recent polls show W ahead in FL, OH, and close in PA, NH and IA.

All true and another excellent post, CW.

Thanks

We can only pray that the demonstrators really, really ACT UP.

Let's remind the older voters and older vets of who John Kerry's friends were....the Chicago rioters.

Let one horse being used by the NYPD be injured by the protestors, say due to a fall caused by a bag of marbles being thrown....if its caught on camera, Kerry will be on the receiving end of wrath like no other politician has seen in the modern era.

Just one, caught on tape is all it will take.

Agreed. There are ways to make sure this happens, btw.

As long as that footage is LIVE and doesn't end up on the cutting room floor.

I don't think you could "conceal" something like this if it occurs. I've heard the media is preparing for a "Chicago 1968" type event, with tons of camera's situated at "points of interest" meaning large open areas as close to the convention hall as possible.

I also suspect the City of New York will go to great lengths to show what that cities Finest are going up against with the "trust fund protesters" of the anti this, anti that groups.

If a horse is injured, NYPD will show the tape to everybody.

The MSM seem to be doing all they can to glorify JF'nK and belittle Dubya...if it weren't for talkradio and the internet we'd be in deep trouble!
Throw in a big HUU-AHH for Fox News too...though it seems they've gone overboard with the lefties lately, trying to overcompensate for their critics I imagine????
