Microsoft released its official Windows XP Service Pack 2 this morning via its Windows Update Service. Its a 75 MB pack that that will take 3 hours to download on standard-dialup. All comments welcome. Its here!
Get a cable modem.
3 hours for an update that will hose my system up, swell.
Full version. 250+ megabytes. Great for burning to CD for your family and friends. I downloaded it last night with high speed connection, it took 15 minutes. I won't be installing it until I read a lot more about the ups and downs.
I'm holding off for now.
come on, nobody's gonna wait three hours. I'm sure there's a way to get it on a CD.
I'm downloading mine. If I can get back without hosing my system, I'll let the forum know. This is NOT the beta release but the "gold" version. Presumably the bugs identified in beta testing have been take care of. I had no problems with the Service 1 Pack.
It depends on the time of day. Now there are few people on and no body knows its out yet, it should download relatively faster. Later in the day it can slow down to a crawl. Nothing like the dead waste and middle of the night to do an upgrade.
And if we never hear from you again.... ;-)
In all fairness, they do recommend you upgrade. The new Windows' Security Center should not be the only thing on your computer so it remains important to have third party anti-virus programs, firewalls, and spyware/malware utilities installed. And training oneself to be in the habit of safe computing.
How will it hose up your system? I've installed it on over 900 boxes with nary a glitch. Am I just incredibly lucky?

Speaking of public libraries, the newest main branch (4 miles from me) has new Dell computers with 512mb memory and P4s at 2.66mhz. Along with 17" Dell LCDs. Talk about overkill! IIRC they even had G4 graphics cards instead of the usual onboard video.
Its too big. The one I'm downloading is a smaller package meant for home users. The 250 MB version is meant for mainframes and multi-user computer workstations.
It wouldnt load for me and I have cable modem and 1000ram 64 bit.
Nothing is perfect but I'm sure Microsoft has already addressed critics' concerns with "silent" patches to the final upgrade. Its still better than what we have now in terms of making our computers more secure to outside attacks.

Just sarcasm. Poking fun at Microsofts upgrades that sometimes go KABLAMO. I've never had a problem with MS upgrades (knock on wood).

I went to the Windows Update page, and it told me to install it, with these details:
Total updates selected: 1 items, 75 MB, 3 hours 56 minutes
yeah right. four hours. even if I wanted to, my ISP probably would disconnect before it was finished (peoplepc).
