The earliest known illustrated poster, or "PIN-UP", if you will – a woodcut of 1491 advertising a Belgian edition of Jean d'Arra's Histoire de la Belle Melusine – may also have been the earliest use of sex appeal in the graphic arts to sell a product… This relatively crude poster showed the heroine, Melusine , taking a bath.
Turn-of the Century "PIN-UPS"
The entire period 1910 – 29, but especially the second half of it, stands in history as a time characterized by a greater liberalism and a more emancipates feminine ideal compared with the periods immediately before and immediately after it.
In 1939 the feminine ideal underwent a clear change… The decent female type of the 1930s gave way to a more glamorized type with greater sexual appeal and heavier makeup. The corset made the bust higher and more pointed, the waist was more clearly defined and slender hips became more rounded. This dream girl, promoted alongside and in contrast to the respectable ideal woman, gradually broke down the barriers of taboos and demands for decency, until in 1939 a sexier feminine ideal came to the fore… The freedom that women had achieved in the post-[World War I] period could not be maintained when the economic crisis began to take hold in 1930, leading to the Depression throughout the Western world. The feminine ideal changed almost immediate from the emancipated and self-confident tomboy ideal of the 1920s to an elegant, 'ladylike' ideal… This was a feminine ideal that clearly indicated the altered position of women in society – a return to old ideals and the old pattern of gender roles.
Perhaps the single most famous wartime pin-up was of Betty Grable, with her 'million dollar legs'.
In the 1930s and 1940s the Petty Girl and the Varga Girl… were no more or less than sexual objects – vivid, yet unreal, functioning in their own world, the fantasies of men.
...to more "modern" times....
