Self-inflicted wounds

From the right

By Steve Tefft

Does John Kerry really want to be president?

The question may seem rhetorical, and it is…to a point. One presumes Massachusetts’ junior senator has chosen to put himself and his family through the meat grinder of modern-day politics because he truly wants the job. But a recent run of campaign missteps makes one wonder: just what is Kerry doing?

August should have been the Democrat’s month. Coming out of a convention that presented him well to the nation’s voters, Kerry was poised to clearly establish himself as the frontrunner heading into autumn. Yet he’s been knocked off kilter — sometimes by events beyond his control, other times by his own hand. His convention unexpectedly provided Kerry no “bounce” whatsoever in the polls. His coast-to-coast tour of battleground states fell flat. Running mate John Edwards, expected to provide sizzle to the ticket, has barely worked up a fizz. He talked of waging a “more sensitive” war on terror. Within the space of a few days, Kerry came out both for and against withdrawing some of America’s troops out of Korea — not a smart move for a guy who already had the reputation of flip-flopping.

But most damaging has been Kerry’s reaction to the challenge posed by the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth, the Vietnam veterans who question — to put it mildly — Kerry’s version of his own service in Vietnam. Through two TV ads and a finely detailed book, the Swifties struck directly at the heart of Kerry’s main (some would say only) reason for running: that his service in Vietnam would make him a better president than the incumbent. Kerry at first said nothing, then responded with finger-pointing anger…blaming President Bush for putting the ads on the air, yet never denying the charges with any degree of specificity.

I think Kerry made a big mistake with his volcanic reaction to the Swifties’ charges, for two reasons. First, his reaction elevated the charges to Page One status; the mainstream media, pro-Kerry to a fault and predisposed to treat the anti-Kerry vets as Republican-funded cranks, are now forced to give the allegations a serious look. Had Kerry simply said nothing, or had a surrogate respond, the issue would have faded away within a few days. Secondly, and perhaps more seriously, Kerry’s reaction made him look extremely thin-skinned and quick to lash out emotionally…something a war hero is not supposed to be.

Kerry’s road to the White House suddenly looks much more precarious than it did just a few weeks ago. Fairly or unfairly, his military-hero sheen is wearing away. The usually supportive mainstream media have been forced — by Kerry’s loss of temper — to examine his war record. The Republican convention is coming up, and while it, like its Democrat predecessor, may not elicit much of a “bounce” in the polls, something that happens eight days after the convention’s end likely will: the third anniversary of the September 11th attacks. The president’s ace in the hole is the strong leadership he provided the country in the days and months after September 11th, and the anniversary of the attacks will certainly remind people of that. Assuming (praying, really) there are no terrorist incidents between now and Election day, the only major, remaining campaign events are the three presidential debates. Kerry will find himself in an almost no-win situation. With a sizable portion of the country still believing the Bush-is-a-dope mantra, Kerry will be expected to “win” the debates and reduce the president to a babbling fool.

If the line of reasoning sounds familiar, it should. Another recent Democrat candidate, a Vietnam vet with an acclaimed intellect, was supposed to wipe the rhetorical floor with the Texas rube. His name was Al Gore. Al Gore lost the debates — and the election.

Good article, except for this point:

Thw Swift Boat Vet first news conference was waaaaaaaaaaaay back in May, and the Media attended. Right afterwards, the crickets chirped, and in their minds, it never happened. The most incredible aspect of this is that many political observers said the Swift Boat Vets press conference (which only C-SPAN covered) was the most devastating thing politically they ever heard.

That was lost on our talking head geniouses at MSMBCCNNABCCNNCBSNBC.

It is all a giant conspiracy to manipulate us rubes. Kerry is just pretending to run a campaign but will make sure that he manages to lose. After all somebody has to deflect all the Bush hatred in the Democrat Party to make sure someone like Dean didn't accidentally win and mess up the whole plot.

The best thing you can do to help an opponent beat you is to underestimate him. DNC is showing that they didn't learn anything from 2000. Insanity is doing the same thing over and over expecting different results. HAHA

Oh, Jeez! Remember the sophomoric sighing and eye rollig by gore? If I had been a 'Rat I would have cringed, as it was I was incredulous that he would even consider such a childish tactic.

For Republicans, it's a meat grinder. For Democrats, it's more like a light neck massage. The MSM have completely abandoned all pretense to "balanced". If the presstitutes were really doing the job they still claim to do, Kerry would be down by 15 points.

"What is Kerry doing?"

The answer is obvious. Herry is an arrogant, lazy elitist who believed all the sycophants, including the whisperers that the Clintons sent. Kerry believed, absolutely, his own press releases.

He has lied about his own Nam record for so long that he even believed it. We all know a "decorated Navy Seal" who sspent his whole tour as a med-tech in Dago. There is no point in calling one of these military liars and the stories may even be interesting.

But traitor John used his lie as a credential; he tried to say it was his 4 months that qualified him to be CinC. And, now, he (but not the Clintons) are surprised that honest folks called him on it. It is no different than the town big shot who has always claimed he had an Ivy League degree. No one ever called him on it because he was a big shot and what difference did it make. But, when he used the lie as a stepping stone for something else, some one checked.

Kerry is an arrogant liar who isn't fit to do anything in the public sector. He must resign and apologize!!

Real SEALs, such as those at VeriSEAL and AuthentiSEAL, would disagree with that assessment. They view these phonies as scum who dishonor their service and especially the sacrifice of their fellow SEALs who have been wounded or killed over the years.

"...the mainstream media ... are now forced to give the allegations a serious look."

How long will hopeful conservatives continue to believe this???

The MSM will never be 'forced' to do anything fairly or truthfully or in a straightforward fashion. Any expectation of this should have disappeared long ago, during the King Bill years if not before, to anyone paying attention.

To continue to think that the MSM will be 'forced' by circumstances to do anything besides support the communist/socialist/dems and tear down America is as realistic for us as it is for the lefties to continue the think that socialism actually works... you have to blatantly ignore the evidence.

It is all we have ever gotten, people...wise up! It is all we can ever expect.
