Next week on September 1st, contrary to the tradition that opposition presidential candidates do not campaign during the political convention of their opponents, John F. Kerry is scheduled to give a speech to the American Legion at the American Legion's national convention in Nashville, TN.
It will be interesting if Sen. Kerry will take back what he had to say about the American Legion in 1971 in the epilogue of his book entitled, The New Soldier:
We will not quickly join those who march on Veterans' Day waving small flags, calling to memory those thousands who died for the "greater glory of the United States." We will not accept the rhetoric. We will not readily join the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars-in fact, we will find it hard to join anything at all and when we do we will demand relevancy such as other organizations have recently been unable to provide. We will not take solace from the creation of monuments or the naming of parks after a select few of the thousands of dead Americans and Vietnamese. We will not uphold traditions which decorously memorialize that which was base and grim.
Senator Kerry, will you take back what you said? Specifically:
Will you unconditionally acknowledge the American Legion is now and was then "relevant" for the simple reason that it represents honorable people always worthy of our praise -- namely, veterans of the United States armed forces? Will you agree that Americans who "wav[e] small flags" and who proudly salute the "greater glory of the United States" are not engaging in mere "rhetoric"?
Will you acknowledge that your anti-war efforts -- including your secret meeting with North Vietnamese representatives while still a member of the U.S. Naval Reserve -- gave aid and comfort to America's enemy in a time of war and besmirched every member of the United States Naval Reserve?
Most of all, will you unequivocally state now that the war against Communism -- including the war against Communism in Vietnam -- was not "base and grim" but rather a righteous and noble war fought by America for the freedom of millions of individuals?
geez, kerry, what's the big deal about apologizing? ... everyone makes mistakes, that's why they put erasers on pencils
If he does, he will "apologize" without admitting that he did anything at all wrong nor will he recant what he has said.
kerry doesn't owe anyone an apology..............he owes all Vets and the American public ........ A FULL CONFESSION!
President Bush will speak also BEFORE Kerry - maybe again, they will turn their back on Kerry.
John Kerry: "I regret the words I used to disparage those who have served our great nation honorably."
Something like that?
Can the Bush-Cheney campaign file a complaint with the FEC about this?
Does Kerry inflict himself on veterans groups or do they actually invite him?
Has Kerry ever participated in any ceremonies at the Vietnam War Veterans Memorial?
"Has Kerry ever participated in any ceremonies at the Vietnam War Veterans Memorial?"
I heard that he used it as the backdrop for a date with Tarayza early on in their ... er ... relationship. (Not kidding!)
Are you a politician? (he asks suspiciously)
bump
LOL, I only wish he does exactly that. People ain't as stupid as he thinks we are... yep we ain't. ;-)
where is the American Legion convention being held? maybe a group of freepers should photocopy Kerry's book and pass it out to those in attendance.
I don't think Kerry knows that the words "I'm sorry" even exist.
Well don't that just beat all. If you wave a small American flag you are engaging in rhetoric. If you burn an American flag you are engaging in free speech.
