SHREVEPORT, La. - A Dallas woman has been sentenced to three years in prison for the deaths of a Karnack, Texas, couple in a drunken driving accident more than two years ago.

Janis Cooksey, 40, pleaded guilty to two counts of vehicular homicide. State District Judge Ramona Emanuel sentenced her Wednesday to 10 years in prison, with seven years suspended, and five years of probation after she is released.

Each count carried up to 20 years in prison.

Police said Cooksey passed out behind the wheel of her automobile on the night of June 24, 2002, causing the vehicle to cross the center line and strike another vehicle in Caddo Parish.

Noretta Bennett, 42, and husband Clifford Bennett, 36, were killed in the collision.

Nice!

Assuming her victims would have lived to be 80, she's giving up one year for every 27 years she stole from them.

What a bargain!

What a crock! What makes driving drunk so special that it can be sentencedc to lighter sentences? Weak-kneened liberal judges piss me off.

The sentence ought to qualify for criminal negiligence.

"What makes driving drunk so special..."

"Janis Cooksey, 40, pleaded guilty to two counts of vehicular homicide."

"Police said Cooksey passed out behind the wheel of her automobile on the night of June 24, 2002,..."

It is interesting that any reference to the court and police records by the reporter does not mention anything about "driving drunk."

Important details have been left out of this article about the woman's legal issues to come to any conclusion that she was "driving drunk."

So you know people that regularly pass out behind the wheel from being tired? I don't, behind some far and wide stories about people being tired because they don't get enough sleep. I do believe that alcohol was involved here.

"So you know people that regularly pass out behind the wheel from being tired? I don't"

People fall asleep behind the wheel all the time, but the first line of the article says she was drunk at the time so I don't think that applies in this case.
