Correct me if I am wrong, but if Kerry had a six year, six month enlistment then he would have been guilty of treason for his antiwar actions and testimony and his trip to Paris to meet with the commies

Someone just posted the question about Kerry's service - that they had heard it read on the radio and had a question and wanted more info - lost the 'poster' and the thread; but here is what I think he was referring to. . .

In any event, it does answer the question - I think it was about his 'Reserve duy' but already. . .cannot remember. . .but the answer IS here!

This is a bogus issue. Kerry was discharged on Jan 3, 1970. His discharge orders state that he will be in the inactive Naval Reserves. He had no drill requirement, just to keep the Navy aware of his whereabouts. He was subject to recall until July 1, 1972 when he was transferred into the Standby Reserves.

The real issue about Kerry's reserve status has to do with his meeting with the Vietnamese communists in Paris while still in the Naval Reserves and subject to recall.

Look, I got exempted from ALL of my reserve duty following active duty simply because I asked to be exempted, and a guy named Dan Quayle wanted that billet in the National Guard (that I had been offered by Department of Defense).

Kerry got out a bit after I did, but at that time Richard Nixon had had a chance to get things in order and it was clear that folks who'd completed their active duty obligations probably didn't need to be kept on a short leash. Besides, some of them, like me for example, had a really, really, really bad attitude toward the draftdodgers then bulging the ranks of the Reserves and the National Guard and probably would treat those people like the $hit they were!

That would not be conducive to good order, eh?!

Not to defend John Kerry, though!

Like Bob Dole, I'd rather see some blood.

The truth of Kerry; plain and simple.

No, it actually shows a complete lack of understanding about the Reserves.

Here is a good explaination of various terms involving the reserve components from a DoD site.

As you can see the Individual Ready Reserve (IRR), a manpower pool in the Ready Reserve, primarily consists of: Individuals who have had training, have served previously in the Active component or the Selected Reserve, and have some period of a military obligation remaining. IRR members are in an active status, but do not perform regularly scheduled training.

Kerry was an IRR. His contract only required him to be ready reservist, not a selected reservist.

Not even all Selected (aka active) reservists serve 17 days active duty for training and 48 drills. In two different periods as an individual mobilization augmentee (IMA), I was only requried to do 24 drills and 12-14 days of active duty each year. (I ususaly did 28 or 32 drills, but the extras were "points only", IOW no pay. There are many categories of ready reservists. Unit reservists, and some IMAs are Cat A, the "usual" 17 days days active duty plus 48 drills (24 days or 12 weekends). Cat. B, which most IMAs are is the 12-14 days (two duty weeks plus travel days as required) active duty plus 24 drills.

The guy is a slime, a traitor, and when he went to Paris to meet with the VC and NV delegations, he was in violation of US law. None of that had a thing to do with his reserve status however. Reservists not on active duty (even for a short period of training, and not performing inactive duty training are not subject to the UCMJ, regardless of what "everyone knows" or "scuttlebutt". Look it up. Such incorrect information just detracts from the credibility of those spreading it. There's plenty in Kerry's record to find fault with. We don't need to make stuff up. For example his DD-214 shows him transferred to the reserve as a LT(jg) (O-2), whereas he claims to have been promoted to LT (O-3).
