The MRC's Geoff Dickens caught this exchange, on Monday's Hardball on MSNBC, in which Matthews not only refused to admit his distortion of Malkin's point, but repeated it:
Matthews: "Welcome back to Hardball. Before we go to Dick Cavett, we want to get some final thoughts from Doug Brinkley and Stanley Karnow. Let me go to Doug Brinkley on a hot point on this program. Doug, there was a woman on the show the other night, Michelle Malkin or something, who was discussing in rather loose terms the idea that maybe John Kerry had purposely wounded himself to win a Purple Heart. Where would she get such an idea?"
Doug Brinkley: "Well, from the Internet, from talk radio. You know this is a right-wing August takedown on John Kerry, and rumors, and accusations, innuendoes flying. And that's just how, how gutter politics is played sometimes in America. It's a, I feel it is a completely irresponsible comment and she needs to apologize for making it. There's no evidence that says John Kerry ever shot himself."
Matthews: "Just a minute, Pat, we'll be back in a minute here. But do you want to say something?"
Buchanan: "Yeah, I do want to say something. Chris, I saw the show you did with Malkin. And there was, there was a misconnection there. She said-"
Matthews: "No, there wasn't. I asked her a dozen times to clarify what she was saying."
Buchanan: "She said, was it a 'self-inflicted wound'? And she said yes. And you were saying, was it purposefully done by Kerry? She should have said, no, it was the-"
Matthews: "Why didn't she say it when I gave her 12 times to do that?"
Buchanan: "Well, it was-"
Matthews: "Twelve times."
Buchanan: "Well, look, I mean-"
Matthews: "Just a minute, Pat."
Buchanan: "You can argue that with Ms. Malkin. But that, what she was saying was right from the book that it was a 'self-inflicted wound,' probably by a grenade that hit the rocks in front of Kerry."
Matthews: "Right. Of course we all know that kind of thing happens in war. The question is, was it purposely, did he purposefully shoot himself or not? That was the question that was being suggested by that discussion."
Buchanan: "I saw her and I do not believe she said it was purposefully-"
Matthews: "Watch the tape, okay."
"Self-inflicted" does not mean on purpose and no one in O'Neill's book, nor Malkin on the August 19 Hardball, ever said that Kerry "shot himself." Only Matthews came up with that slam at Kerry.
Why doesn't Buchanan grow a set of balls with Matthews? He seems to be able to have the balls enough to criticize President Bush pretty well since he knows damn well, Bush has too much class to respond.
Way back, I used to like Buchanan, not any more. Like O'Reilly, they are not conservatives, they are CINOs.
Your thinking of Michael Moore's parents. That's a different incident.
"MSNBC's ratings are flat-line."
Thank you for that assessment. I heard the thing purely by chanc and came unglued. Figured that the man needs to be zapped from above for his lying mouth.
Buchanan got 37 words in a row out without Matthews interrupting him. Was he holding a chair cushion over Matthews face at the time?
This would be important if somebody was actually watching Hardball.
alas, as the ratings demonstrate, nobody is watching.
Poor Chrissy, all dressed up and nobody to blow.....
It also bothers me that their was little sympathy from the media for Michelle... only Rush and Hannity let her tell what happened!
I did watch the show, Chrissyfit, and she only said self-inflicted--she never said purposefully.
Buchanan: "She said, was it a 'self-inflicted wound'? And she said yes. And you were saying, was it purposefully done by Kerry? She should have said, no, it was the-"
Matthews: "Why didn't she say it when I gave her 12 times to do that?" Buchanan: "Well, it was-"
Matthews: "Twelve times."
Buchanan: "Well, look, I mean-"
Matthews: "Just a minute, Pat."
Perfect example of what happened to Ms. Malkin. I knew Matthews wouldn't apologize. Either Chrissyfit is being willfully ignorant or he has a pea brain. Somehow I think it's both in his case.
Here's my letter to Hardball. I might as well have sent it to my dog, but it made me feel better.
Chrissyfit Matthews, if he were a decent human being, would humbly apologize on his August 20th show to all his viewers, to Mr. Thurlow, and, most of all, to Mrs. Malkin for his disgusting, foaming at the mouth display on August 19th. However, I have little hope that Chrissy could ever be decent or humble. We know from last night's on air emotional seizure that he can never be fair.
At one time the mainstream media in this country at least attempted to fake, on occasion, that they were somewhat fair and balanced. Now no attempt is made. Not even attempt to be courteous to the guests that are invited on programs. That is the most infuriating part.
Instead, the guests, if not in agreement with the host, are badgered and talked over. Words are put into a guest's mouth and then they are not allowed to reply. Books are not read and, if the host does do his research, facts are distorted or ignored.
I was totally disgusted by the whole frenzy of the August 19th show. I was sincerely hoping Mrs. Malkin would have slapped Chrissy in the face or grabbed him by the collar or ear in order to momentarily stop his convulsion then told him to "quit spitting on me because rabies shots are painful".
Well I hope Keith and Chrissy have fun giving each other kudos for their nastiness to their guests. It shows the mentality that permeates MSNBC--not a mature place to be sure. The only thing that comes to mind is Lord of the Flies because obviously the adults in charge have left the building.
Here's the Malkin thread from last Friday where she discusses the ambush:

I've noticed this the last couple of night as well. How sad when you see someone you thought had ethics and integrity sell out for a job. Self respect is one of the few things in life that cannot be taken away from you. The only way to lose it is if you give it away and so many of these media whores seem to do it so willingly.
does NOT translate to "shot himself with a gun".
P.S. I addressed the letter to the Hardball staff aka Kerry campaign.
"Way back, I used to like Buchanan, not any more. Like O'Reilly, they are not conservatives, they are CINOs."
Pat Buchanan isn't conservative?
My wife can't understand why I'm not into Bill O'Reilly anymore. Too many "pinhead" comments, I suppose. Sometimes he is an impressive interviewer, tough but fair. Too often he is just boorish.
You forgot the "sarcasm off", or are you a sKerryite?
(Is it OK to be a "Buchananite" when he's going around campaigning against Kerry?)
The answer is "YES".
What I do know is that Scarborough is much more watchable/tolerable than Chris Matthews. At least on the last show I saw he was trying to play it up the middle. While that may not be my cup of tea either he, at least, gave the Swiftie, Steve Gardner, a chance to talk and was blatantly bias toward one side or the other.
Speech-impediment Matthews just certified his "moron" status. Comprehension problems? Anyone who saw the exchange, or read the transcript, knows this is a flat out lie, or a total lack of normal comprehension.
