Kerry's MRI following bicycle accident was impossible
WPHT 1210am | Aug. 25, 2004 | MojoWire

Posted on 08/24/2004 9:20:46 PM PDT by Edit35

Several months ago, John Kerry fell off his bicycle while riding in Boston, and subsequently told reporters that he got an MRI just as a precaution.

Now, considering that he also claims to have shrapnel in his leg from Vietnam, doesn't it make an MRI impossible due to the metal's magnetic interference.

This is my first vanity post, so forgive me. But I just heard WPHT radio host Rolleye James talking about the impossibility of Kerry getting an MRI with metal in his leg, and I thought I post the info.

I never had an MRI so I'm not sure.

I'm surprised he didn't put in a request for a yellow jersey.

I almost expect Kery to call a press conference to announce, "Because the Internet makes it virtually impossible for me to lie anymore, I regret to say I am withdrawing from the race."

http://www.ecureme.com/emyhealth/data/Musculoskeletal_MRI.asp

Let your radiologist or technologist know when you have a metal object in your body, such as a cardiac pacemaker, prosthetic heart valve, prosthetic hip or knee joint, implanted infusion pump, intrauterine device (IUD), cochlear implant, aneurysm clip or vascular clips, hearing aid, metal monitoring device, surgical staples, metal plates, pins, screws, bullets, shrapnel or any metal fragments.

This is because the strong magnetic fields can cause these ferromagnetic metal objects to move, dislodge, cause burns, or electrical currents.

Sorry to rain on the speculative parade but JFK can safely have an MRI every time he earns a biking related purple heart.

Many patients are scanned safely with metal rods, shrapnel, hip and knee replacements etc. The metal will degrade the adjacent anatomy but it is not a health risk to the patient or a contraindication to scanning a different part of the body.

Contraindications for MRI include cochlear implants (sorry Rush), cerebral aneuryms clips, and metal within the eyes. Pacemakers aren't safe since the magnet may induce an electrical current within the pacing wires.

"It all depends on what your defintion of 'sharpnel' is"

. . .'did I say 'MRI'?. . .I meant a 'cat scan'; no, I meant a botox inj/oops. . .no. . .it was an x-ray; but felt like a MRI. . .

. . .I HAD THE SCHRAPNEL REMOVED IN A SECRET SURGERY!

Great thinking. From Musculoskeletal MRI

The strong magnetic field can cause metal implants to dislodge, burn, and cause additional injuries. When you have any metal implant in your body, such as a pacemaker, prosthetic valves, or clips, you should let your radiologist or technologist know its brand name and model. If it is not confirmed to be compatible with the magnet, you should not take the MRI. If you have had bullet injuries or possible metal fragments in your body, X-rays can be taken instead for detection of metal objects.

Metallic implants/fragments that might be affected by magnet:

  1. Cardiac pacemakers
  2. Artificial cardiac valves
  3. Cerebral aneurysm clips, vascular clips
  4. Epidural electrodes
  5. Prosthetic hip
  6. Prosthetic knee
  7. Implanted port (brand names: Port-o-cath, Infusaport, Lifeport)
  8. Chemotherapy or insulin pumps
  9. Intrauterine device (IUD)
  10. Metallic bone plates, pins, screws, surgical staples, especially within 4-6 weeks after surgery.
  11. Bullets, shrapnel, possible metal fragments, especially in and around eyes
  12. Metallic ear implants

You can't have ANY METAL in the room..none, nana, zero, zilch...that big magnet will search and find any metal at all!!!!

All I can think of is Mighty Mouse!

I was trying to be funny, thinking that if Kerry said he had an MRI, he would just dig himself in deeper with another lie.

After saying he had an MRI, he obviously "forgot" that you can't have any metal in the room.

"I think if you just have a small piece in your leg, they can still able to do an MRI of your head."

Not for Kerry. Where he has his head stuck is too close to his leg.

Or perhaps Kerry would call that press conference. One of those guys, anyway.

Has Kerry been caught in another lie?

Let me know when he's caught telling the truth.

Kerry can't have an MRI cause their is nothing to see, Jelly Fish have no true structure.

Youngest son WAS dating radiologist... can't ask her now. LOL.

He should have married her. Radiologists have magnetic personalities.

"high frequency magnets, MRI still works, it just will fog up near the metal but the metal would show nice and bright.# That's my guess, too. The metal will distort the field."

Well, guess I should have kept on reading. . .

I had 6 MRIs last year and YOU'RE RIGHT. They wouldn't even let me wear my wedding rings. I had to fill out all kinds of paperwork (every time) stating that I had no metal staples or scraps of metal in me anywhere. HMMMMMM!!!! You're on to something.

...Um.. Lead is not affected by electromagnetic fields, that is why it is used as sheilding for x-ray rooms and gonad sheilding.

If sKerry had any lead in his ass it would not prevent an MRI.

An Aluminum boat when struck would produce a non magnetic peace of shrapnel.

The shrapnel was apparently from an M79 grenade that Kerry launched a little too close to the boat. If the grenade was made from steel or iron, he couldn't be in the same room as an MRI if there were shapnel in him.
