Obama not exactly black? Just what does that mean?
Houston Chronicle ^ | August 24, 2004 | CLARENCE PAGE

Clarence Page questions reasoning of observers who say the Illinois Senate candidate is less black because of intercontinental roots.

CHICAGO — Some people, particularly those who are tone deaf to the ironies of life, have a problem with Barack Obama's race. They have a hard time deciding what it is.

Ever since the front-running candidate for the U.S. Senate from Illinois burst onto the national stage with a riveting keynote address at the Democratic National Convention, I've been hearing from readers who question why the media, including me, insist on referring to Obama as "black" or "African-American" when he is "really" biracial.

Are we trying to render his white Kansas mother irrelevant? No, I say, we're just recognizing that the realities of race have more to do with psychology, sociology and politics than actual science.

OK, why is it that someone who is racially mixed is automatically considered black, unless their last name is "Suarez" and then they are considered Hispanic? The majority of Dominicans and Puerto Ricans in this country are mulatto, yet they are never claimed as black.

I beg to differ.

Race and Ethnicity are officially two different things. (I used to work for the Gummit and had to learn such trivia.) So, officially, at least, there are Black Hispanics.

He's like Harold Frod Jr from Memphis........

His black mother saw to it that half of his genes were white.

Obama not exactly black? Just what does that mean?

He fails to meet the color-chip test.

Everyone.....must......be......labelled.

That's the only way to separate and divide us. Without labels, liberalism would die.

As someone who has spent a considerable portion of his professional life working around Latin America, the issue of a "Hispanic/Latino" ethnicity is arguable. Then again, the gubmint has been known to be illogical in the past (no offence). ;-)

None of this changes the fact that Obama is a left-wing douche.

No, No, No, the only people who are officially NOT black are Clarence Thomas and Colin Powell and . . . well, you get the idea.

Color is a Democrat obsession. They obsess about it, write about it, try and specify percentages, try to afflict the rest of us with their obsession and then accuse us of being afflicted with their obsession.

Color-blind citizenship. If you are ready for it, you're a Republican at heart. If not, then not.

We can go with that.

Not quite accurate, but really sounds good!

As in, he is black in the Alisha Keyes/ Halle Berry sense.
