GOP to finesse immigration issue
The Washington Times ^ | 8/23/2004 | Ralph Z. Hallow

The Republican Party's platform will oppose amnesty for illegal aliens, predicts Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, the platform committee chairman.

"I believe it likely there will be a strong statement against amnesty," the Tennessee Republican said in an interview with The Washington Times.

President Bush's "guest-worker" proposal for dealing with illegal immigration, which he outlined in a White House speech in January, includes a limited, three-year amnesty for qualified illegal aliens holding jobs in the United States.

The plan has deeply angered many Republicans, who say it is meant to pander to the growing Hispanic vote, and they blame the idea on Bush advisers, including chief political strategist Karl Rove.

You're wrong about the border policy. They are using what I can only think of as a trial policy at the Northwest border. We have a fence, rotating security cameras, airplanes, a real patrolling border patrol and some of the fastest looking boats you have ever seen. I told you all about this before and no one believed me. Well, I saw it reported on FOX news, yesterday.

I have a bunch of letters from Kay Bailey but she won't take a stand on anything. She always closes her letters by saying that she will keep my thoughts in mind when the issue comes before the Senate. I don't want to hear that - I want her to stand for something.

She will go which ever way the wind is blowing. I won't stand for that!!

You are ahead of me. I have sent two letters, both very nice, asking for action on illegal immigration but have yet to receive a reply. Guess she couldn't figure out which side of the issue she is on.

Huh??! You sure you don't have me mixed up with someone else around here.

Your reply doesn't quite make sense to me. I admit that I've been up all night and maybe there is a fog between my ears at this point. Care to elaborate a bit more on what I'm wrong about in my Post #17?

"and they blame the idea on Bush advisers, including chief political strategist Karl Rove".

The idea may be from his advisers, But Bush either goes along or doesn't use it.

Bush is wrong on this one and if he loses the election he can blame this one issue.

Too many Americans have had to struggle to make a life and living for their families and too many immigrants broke their backs to get their small part in the American Dream ,and they did it legally.

Bush and his Merry Hacks are playing fast and loose with the constitution and with the law.
They are demeaning all of the People who did it right and became Good American Citizens.

Bush may live to regret this maneuver and hoax he is perpetrating on the American People and the worst could be helping put Kerry in the White House.

He can thank Karl Rove!

No freebies for the illegals and put our troops on the borders. Fox and crew aiding and abetting the enemies of America. Mexico has always had a soft spot for the commies, just ask Trotsky?

That's very true and it's one of the only reasons the Bush policy on Mexico makes any sense to me. Fidel is still hard at work trying (and succeeding in some instances, like Venezuela and possibly Brazil) to export Communist revolution to South and Central America. Letting Mexico fall into full-bore Marxism would be a disaster for the U.S. I think Bush feels that propping up Vicente Fox with his policy on illegals helps keep a friendly government going in Mexico and helps him with his rich American contributors. His own family links to Mexico also play a role.

I agree and disagree with Ron H.'s #17. Yes, Bush should by all means level with the American people if that's what he's really thinking. But I believe the political future of Mexico is and should be very much a U.S. concern. Mexico is a wonderful country with wonderful people. It is rich with natural resources, especially oil, and is strategically located vis a vis the U.S. What's needed is some "consciousness-raising" about these issues and how they figure into the war on terror, the future political/economic stability of the Americas given our estrangement from traditional European allies and growing challenges in the Pacific.

Guess she couldn't figure out which side of the issue she is on.

She is on which ever side of the issue the butter is on.

Since you're from Texas I'll give you a quick break down on my efforts. I received 1 letter from El Presidente Jorge Boosh, 28 from Kay Bailey, 4 from John Cornyn, 1 from Martin Frost, and several each from Phil Gramm (Ret), Jeb Hensarling, Chuck Hagel, and Ralph Hall.

Pete Sessions is my representative and I have a few letters from him but he and I see eye to eye on immigration so he is cool. Beware of John Cornyn - he is pro-amnesty.

I am an equal opportunity harasser!! Good luck.

I don't care whether FOX is right left or center, they still covered a local story that many of you doubted, when I stated the facts from my own observations. We have had this type of surveillance for over a year. I know because my friend's son got caught in a drug bust using the cameras.

I understand what you are saying about propping up Mexico economically being in our overall best interests and agree with that part. However I strongly disagree with how Bush is going about it. Tell me and others here, do you support Bush's plan to reward 8-20+ million law breakers with his guest worker (i.e. amnesty) plan?

The illegals need to be shipped back to wherever they came and require then to enter our nation as law abiding immigrants and work towards citizenship and assimilation and learn to speak the predominant language of this land. Illegal Mexican immigrants have amply demonstrated for years that they don't want to abide by our laws nor do they want to follow existing laws that you and I as American citizens must and do abide by and a great many of them have refused to even try to assimilate.

Rewarding belligerent and arrogant lawbreakers only breeds contempt for our nations rule of law and our way of operating this nation. Rewarding criminal aliens is not the answer and I pledge to actively oppose ANY one seeking any public office or seeking to get re-elected to one if they are trying legalize these many millions of tax-payer law breakers.

I happen to believe personally that if Bush is successful in pushing thru his blanket amnesty plan (in this term or in a next one if he is re-elected) that in a few short years one can look back and point to it as being the one single significant action that leads us to losing our nations sovereignty and end up borderless with its citizens losing their unique American identity. Can everyone say 'Hello Big Brother and Globalism'.

We're in agreement. I've posted many times making the same points you do. The rule of law is basic to all this. If it's okay to ignore immigration law, what laws will the establishment enforce? If the government ignores the law why should any of us respect it?

Yup. But as Bill Murray said in that great political movie, "Ghostbusters":

You know, I'm a voter!... Aren't you supposed to lie to me and kiss my butt?
