However, the consequences of such a significant troop withdrawal have a couple of downsides, too, most of all for the Germans. One mostly overlooked but important side effect is the departure of the US troops themselves. With their visible presence of African-Americans and immigrants from Asia and Latin America, they enriched the German shopping malls and restaurants, representing a multi-ethnic society. If they are gone, German society will lose a bit of color, so to speak. This step will play into the hands of right wing xenophobes whose aim is to purify the German nation. Here, by accident, the goal of the Neo-Nazis and the one of the German socialists coincides.

I'm talking about atmospherics here, we can't help, but wield enormous power. Theoretically, the military is only an instrument of the civilian leadership. But, that leadership in great crisis. And doing a 180 every four years is very destabilizing to a world every day more intricately interconnected. We trivilize this by injecting paltry and insignificant internal issues into the global dialog. And that even more reduces our ability to intervene when it's really important.

"global dialogue", 'cultural imperialism', these are leftist buzzwords used to bash the US over the head for anything and everything.
So, what would you have us do then?
Let the UN handle the terrorists?

Why are you taking the opinion of one stupid journalist and morphing it into some kind of U.S.policy?
And why are you posting only your selected portion of the article?

The US President may or may not be, but he can only call for troops which must be approved by Congress.
