Houston Area Petrochem Upset Event??

Posted on 08/22/2004 8:06:42 PM PDT by Frank_Discussion

Any Houstonians in the Southeast part of town step outside tonight? It smells NASTY. I know, I know, smelling up the news sounds funny, but you would have to smell it. I've lived in houston 30 of my 35 years, and about ten of those down here in the Clear Lake/Pasadena area, and I know what stenches can issue from the chem plants.

I've never smelled THIS - it's almost like someone detonated a city-sized rotten mango down here! Really, it has me concerned. It literally took my breath away.

Does anyone know what it might be?

The plants have H2S detection all over the plant. They are required to have an alarm system. They probably had a release, but then went into shutdown mode within a few minutes. If the situation got out of control then you would hear an alarm. A VERY LOUD ALARM.

I wouldn't worry. A high concentration of H2S should quickly be dispersed by the winds. You have lots of wind at night near Houston because of the Gulf. If you keep smelling stuff in the air then you should call the State to investigate. It could be something that the plants don't know about.

Welcome to Houston. The petrochemical capital of the world. Speaking of that, there is a large gas fire in Liberty County that has been burning for four days. It lights up the night sky.

FYI, and likely not related to this situation, is a chemical described here:

http://www.bt.cdc.gov/agent/soman/basics/facts.asp

called Soman. Chemical warfare agent. Smells like camphor, or rotting fruit.

I note with interest that the Junior League of Houston had its first Cotillion dance today.

Well I don't need them but there isn't one here so when we go by Uvalde we stop. Kind of old memories. (I used to live in Crosby)

You feeling better?

Feeling okay. If that changes, I'll attempt to say so.

Now that fire was spooky. We were in Moss Hill and it was a weird site to see in the sky last night. My BIL said he was told it would burn out yesterday but it was still glowing .

Hi Frank.

Call back the PD and REPORT IT.
Tell them you would like someone to come out
and pardon the pun, "sniff" around.

It might be a drug lab.
It could be something else.

So, hop to it and get back online with the PD.

If the dispatcher is not inclined to send a car out;
then you tell her/him you would like to speak to
the Watch Commander.

Good luck.

Do you have a police scanner? You can tune in and see if there are any calls of people getting ill or...
