~ MONDAY FAVORITES ~ This week: What is your favorite dessert? |
|
In our continuing series about your favorites, we ask this week about food. We chose this topic for the most obvious of reasons--we all like eating. Instead of wasting time eating something nutritious, we skip to dessert. After all, that's the most important part of the meal. So? Post your favorite dessert and a picture on the thread. If you can't reach us via Freepmail, email us at canteenusa@canteenusa.com . By the way, you can put more than one favorite dessert. These things can be hard sometimes. We don't want to stress you. |
|
~ Dessert Exhibit A~ ~ Cookies ~ Don't see your favorite dessert? Post it on the thread. Also, post the recipe if you'd like. (Click pictures for recipes! If you have a better recipe, please share it with everyone!)
Chocolate Chip Cookies
DID YOU KNOW? |
Ruth Wakefield invented Chocolate Chip Cookies. Ruth Graves Wakefield graduated from the Framingham State Normal School Department of Household Arts in 1924. She worked as a dietitian and lectured on food, until, together with her husband she bought a tourist lodge named the Toll House Inn.
Ruth Wakefield prepared the recipes for the meals served to the guests at the Inn and gained local notoriety for her deserts. One of her favorite recipes was for Butter Drop Do cookies. The recipe called for the use of baker's chocolate and one day Ruth found herself without the needed ingredient. She substituted a semi-sweet chocolate bar cut up into bits. However, unlike the baker's chocolate the chopped up chocolate bar did not melt completely, the small pieces only softened.
As it so happened the chocolate bar had been a gift from Andrew Nestle of the Nestle Chocolate Company. As the Toll House chocolate chip cookie recipe became popular, sales of Nestle's semi-sweet chocolate bar increased. Andrew Nestle and Ruth Wakefield struck a deal. Nestle would print the Toll House Cookie recipe on its packaging and Ruth Wakefield would have a lifetime supply of Nestle chocolate. (Click here to find out more information.) |

The HR bimbo almost tossed her cookies when I dug into a glistening, gooey, soft, steamy toosie roll. -:)
It was worth all the trouble it caused to watch her go back to her office, frantically wade through her encyclopedia of forbidden practices to see what kind of a harrassment lawsuit she could come up with.

You're far too kind. And my service to America was all my pleasure and not enough for this great country. My only hope is to give far more than I recieve.
Thank you for your support of our troops.

Have you ever read Linda Bowles' column titled "Odie", written on the death of her 16 year-old cockapoo? It's maybe the finest tribute to a pet ever penned. She hasn't written since the terminal illness (which resulted in his death) of her husband ~2 years ago & I miss her every day. But her columns are archived--Creator's Syndicate. "Odie" was reprinted in Jan. 2000. See if you can find her archives via Google.
I too think dogs are a unique "tender mercy" from God. They're friends, shepherds, protectors, eyes for the blind, ears for the deaf, rescuers of the lost, guardians of children--the list of the services they render humanity is almost endless. They make us laugh (and they know when we're down & need cheering up), they lower blood pressure, let us sleep at night knowing they're on 24 hour watch.......I can't imagine living without one.

Against the day your mom can't send you any more fruitcake, check this out & order a small one to try. FULL of Texas pecans (they say how many cups of pecans are in each one--lots), just candied cherries & some pineapple, as I recall. And they're not those yucky gummy icebox-"confection"-type things but a real cake batter barely holding them together.

The only homemade fruitcake I've ever tasted that can compare is one my mom used to make; think I still have the recipe. Its secret was mashed ripe banana in the batter. You couldn't really identify banana as an ingredient, but it gave the most wonderful moistness & an instantly-aged flavor. But mercy, what a process & an expensive one to boot. You'd better treasure your mother.

Gag - are you kidding me?I'm going to try to ignore your rude comment, knowing that you have obviously not been schooled in the enjoyment of country cooking. I'm getting ready to post my recipe for Fried Green Tomatoes (upon request), so cover your eyes....:)
