Swiftboat Veterans for the Truth spokesman John O'Neill dared Sen. John Kerry on Sunday to sue him for libel if, as Kerry's presidential campaign maintains, key claims in O'Neill's book "Unifit for Command" are not true.
"I invite him to sue me for libel," O'Neill, who co-authored the overnight bestseller with Jerome Corsi, told WABC Radio's Monica Crowley. "If he was actually in Cambodia on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day he should sue me. If, in fact, those other five [Swift]boats, on March the 13, [1969], if they all fled like he did, instead of staying like he knows they did, he should sue me."O'Neill continued:
"If he didn't wound himself with a grenade - causing sort of a rice-fanny wound - and then reported it to the Navy as a water mine - if he didn't do that on March 13th should sue me."
O'Neill issued the challenge after noting that Kerry's campaign has gone to extraordinary lengths to supress the information in "Unfit for Command."
"On our first [Swiftvet] ad, he had two huge lawfirms send letters to every [TV] station, threatening to sue the stations themselves" if they ran the ad, the former Swiftboat commander told Crowley.
"The next thing he did was challenge the book's publisher, Regnery, indicating he would sue them if they continued printing the book," he added.
The bestselling author said that while Regnery declined to stop printing "Unfit," it offered to republish Kerry's 1971 book "The New Soldier," which chronicles the top Democrat's anti-war protests with a group bankrolled by Jane Fonda.
Kerry has declined to have "New Solidier" republished over the years and reportedly bought up most of the available copies in 1972, after his opponent in a congressional race used it to paint him as anti-American.
Thanks so much for the EXCELLENT NRO link on O'Neill !!! Had not seen it. Wonder if Rush has ever referenced ?
527 Organizations
The prohibition against the use of corporate funds to make or finance electioneering communications does not apply to certain organizations incorporated under 26 U.S.C. §527.
Incorporated state party committees and state candidate committees registered as 527 organizations are exempt from the corporate prohibition provided that the committee:
Is not a political committee, as defined at 11 CFR 100.5;
Incorporates for liability purposes only;
Does not use any funds donated by corporations or labor organizations to fund the electioneering communication; and
Complies with the FECs reporting requirements for electioneering communications. 11 CFR 114.2(b)(2)(iii).
Unincorporated, unregistered 527 organizations may also make electioneering communications, subject to the disclosure requirements and the prohibition against corporate and labor funds.
The reason I said all that is, I'm thinking that Kerry is holding his service record to be some kind of October surprise, where he can whip it out and say, "See, it's all here" (even though it may very well be a bunch of BS that's in there)
Oh, boy. Any word on when and where the likely venue for airing will occur?
Can we count on PBS to show it, LOLOL!!
Prairie
*** By the time the case goes to trial, the election will be over and Kerry can drop the suit ****
they're both lawyers ... Kerry knows that O'Neill could countersue and then he couldn't drop the case
Bump
Nah. He'd pull it out now, if it was favorable.
Kerry can't afford for this to drag on. It undercuts the entire premise for his campaign.
It will pass a point of no return.
PBS - maybe when pigs fly! LOL
I thought George Will said the 28 minute video would be released in September.
Someone had a good thought and said those 527's supposedly can't advertise or anything 60 days before the election. I'm campaign finance challenged, so I don't know.
LOL!!!
I've read something about that 60 day limit too. I suppose they could release the video on Sept 1 or 2 and still be within the limits.
I have no doubt that O'Neill is fully familiar with the CFR rules and things are well-planned.
So you heard this from Will too?
Prairie
Yes. I was watching the Stephanapolous show and he asked Steph: "Do you think the Swift Boat vets will still be around in a month or so?"
Will: "Yes. They have made or are making a 28 minute video which will be released in September (or the fall, I've forgotten which) but before the election and they aren't going away."
So many people hit the pictures that I had posted that BellSouth cut off my access... Grrrrr...
Anyway, will see if there's another way to post them!
LOL .. Yea right
Nasty ? thats not nasty what about Kerrys little hits and shots he cuts everyone and everything down not to mention 30+ years of listening to this POS cut down every military movement from vietnam on telling vets they suck and giving them the finger 30 years after.
He comes back betrays them while they are still there ill tell you what he deserves and those who protested against our boys while they were over there they deserve a whole hell of alot more than just a little so called nastiness !
If i mention it here id be banned for sure so ill leave it to your imagination.
Nasty? ...... this dont even come close to nasty
P.I.A.B.
He said the same thing on The 700 Club and told Pat Robertson to sue him too if he wasn't telling the truth.
LOL!
This is just too good.
Kerry could never, ever hope to be O'Neill's intellectual equal.
