O'Neill Dares Kerry: 'Sue Me'
NewsMax .com ^ | 8/22/04 | Carl Limbacher

Swiftboat Veterans for the Truth spokesman John O'Neill dared Sen. John Kerry on Sunday to sue him for libel if, as Kerry's presidential campaign maintains, key claims in O'Neill's book "Unifit for Command" are not true.

"I invite him to sue me for libel," O'Neill, who co-authored the overnight bestseller with Jerome Corsi, told WABC Radio's Monica Crowley. "If he was actually in Cambodia on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day he should sue me. If, in fact, those other five [Swift]boats, on March the 13, [1969], if they all fled like he did, instead of staying like he knows they did, he should sue me."

O'Neill continued:

"If he didn't wound himself with a grenade - causing sort of a rice-fanny wound - and then reported it to the Navy as a water mine - if he didn't do that on March 13th should sue me."

O'Neill issued the challenge after noting that Kerry's campaign has gone to extraordinary lengths to supress the information in "Unfit for Command."

"On our first [Swiftvet] ad, he had two huge lawfirms send letters to every [TV] station, threatening to sue the stations themselves" if they ran the ad, the former Swiftboat commander told Crowley.

"The next thing he did was challenge the book's publisher, Regnery, indicating he would sue them if they continued printing the book," he added.

The bestselling author said that while Regnery declined to stop printing "Unfit," it offered to republish Kerry's 1971 book "The New Soldier," which chronicles the top Democrat's anti-war protests with a group bankrolled by Jane Fonda.

Kerry has declined to have "New Solidier" republished over the years and reportedly bought up most of the available copies in 1972, after his opponent in a congressional race used it to paint him as anti-American.

John Kerry is a traitor. That he is even being considered to be a presidential candidate speaks volumes about his supporters and the state of this nation.

Don't kid yourself about Edwards. He doesn't argue cases he can't win.

If releasing Kerry's military records would end the damage to Kerry, it would have been done a long time ago.

Using Kerry's four months in Vietnam as the centerpiece of his campaign was a major strategic blunder. Kerry thought his posing as a war hero gave him a Kevlar vest protecting him from criticism. Kerry thought his side could bully anyone attacking him on his military service and make such an attack backfire to Kerry's advantage and appear horribly unfair. He succeeded in doing this in his past Senate campaigns. Unfortunately he was attacked this time from the flank. His opponent, Bush, didn't make the charge.

Nobody but the Swiftboat guys could have effectively made this case and, boy, have they!

Except see Reply 77. Is it possible that the entire book is part of the Congressional Record?

You can gauge the effectiveness of the SBVT ads by the reaction they've gotten from the Kerry campaign. It's hurting them. The average undecided voter is not a guy who wants lots of details. That's why he's still "undecided."

I've got only one question for voters going to the polls in November:

You are staring down a gun barrel, preparing to go to battle with a determined and vicious opponent. You get to take with you a small group of comrades to help you map strategy and fight alongside you. You must believe in their valor implicitly, you must place your full faith in your comrades to defend and value your life as they do their own, and you must do the same for their lives.

Who do you want by your side?

George Bush, Dick Cheney and John O'Neill
--or--
John Kerry, John Edwards and John Hurley

For every American, you truly are facing this battle, and that is exactly the choice you have.

Well .. that's because people don't like to see their President called names .. like the Kerry camp is doing to President Bush.

And .. just for reference, KERRY ISN'T PRESIDENT .. so there's no automatic response to defend or protect him from what people say about him, like their is with the actual president.

Yes, it's 254 veterans against Kerry's word. Are you saying you think all 254 veterans are lying and Kerry is telling the truth ..?? That's not very realistic. Kerry wrote his OWN AFTER ACTION REPORTS TO GET HIS MEDALS. More than 60 of the veterans say Kerry's account of the actions is incorrect.

Nasty? I'll tell you how nasty Kerry is. His public statements gave comfort and courage to the communists in Vietnam and many more Americans died because of it. POW's were tortured and mistreated because of it.

Nope, but have been sued. Then had the case dropped because it was frivolous in the extreme. But in the meantime it actually got into court.

Politically speaking, the only people the SwiftVets are likely to turn off are those lukewarm bodies who never were really in Bush's corner, and actually harbor a bit of dislike for him. They would not admit it because it makes them look stupid, but nevertheless that's how they think.

They're the same people who stood up for our fellatio Prez Bill because they disliked his opposition more. Any person that would change their vote for President Bush based on this ad, would have found some other reason to do the same, absent the ad. And, any person who would have taken clinton's side, based on their antipathy for those bringing him to heel, can't be considered a serious person, and there's simply no way to coax his or her vote your way. They're the frivolous voters.

Initially, I thought these ads to be a mistake, but I can see that they have wounded kerry pretty seriously, and the more this drags on the more the wound will gape.

The Swiftees have played their hand strategically and masterfully, and no matter how this all turns out, it has been cathartic for our Vietnam Vets, and a price tag can't be put on that. They deserve that catharsis, they earned the right to it, and they have every right to disembowel mssr. kerry in the slow fashion in which it seems to be proceeding. No person deserves this public evisceration more than that pusillanimous Senator from MA.

Not only Americans, but millions of Vietnamese and Cambodians as well. And he did it for his own political gain and self-glorification. Now THAT is nasty. I will not feel sympathy for this man no matter what happens to him.

"When they filed the FEC complaint, my very first thought was: Ah, they DON'T have grounds for a libel action."

Actually, they're two separate matters. The FEC complaint alleges election law violations by SBVT and has no bearing on the libel accusation. Even if it did, it would make sense to get a finding from FEC before proceding with the libel suit. This would add credibility to the case.

In any case, none of this is going to happen unless Kerry goes smooth off.
