Swift Boat Accounts Incomplete And Flawed Clashes Roil Kerry Campaign

By Michael Dobbs Washington Post Staff Writer Sunday, August 22, 2004; Page A01

When John F. Kerry rescued James Rassmann from the Bay Hap River in the jungles of Vietnam in March 1969, neither man could possibly have imagined that the episode would become a much-disputed focus of an American presidential campaign 35 years later.

For Kerry, then a green and gangly Navy lieutenant junior grade and now the Democratic challenger to a wartime Republican president, that tale of heroism under fire has become integral to his campaign. A centerpiece of public rallies, videos and a new campaign advertisement last week, it has helped distinguish the candidate from his Democratic primary rivals and from President Bush, who spent the war at home as a member of the Texas Air National Guard.

Considering the fact that the protocol when there was a wounded vessel was to "circle the wagons" and lay down cover fire for the rescue, this graphic is VERY damaging to Kerry inasmuch as it confirms that he was the only vessel to turn tail and run from the wounded vessel. All the other vessels stayed for whatever fight might ensue.

Further it confirms that Rassman was ejected due to the negligence of Kerry rather than from the explosion. It also confirms that it was Kerry who placed him in the drink, so he certainly didn't deserve a medal for rescuing him later. If anything he should have received a rerprimand for abandoning a man-overboard.

Finally it confirms that Kerry could not possibly know if there was any enemy fire coming from the banks, as he was too busy running from the scene to witness it.

Is it any wonder after this action that his fellow commanders "suggested" that he use his third purple heart as an excuse to get out of 'Nam? They couldn't count on him.

Swift Boat Accounts Incomplete And Flawed, Clashes Roil Kerry Campaign.

Though they're far more complete and less flawed than Kerry's accounts.

Thanks for the link...I think. ;o)
It's helpful for me to remember that Clift
was, most likely, for VVAW when Kerry was
testifying before the Senate.

"One member of the group recalled how each of them had been issued a 90-pound sea bag, and Kerry sacrificed 10 pounds of socks and clean underwear to pack a typewriter."

Yes...this would be the most interesting aspect of
the article. ;o)

"For an incumbent president in as much trouble as Bush, fighting a war that’s been over for nearly 30 years takes voters’ minds off Iraq."

LOL! I didn't realize that she could
be so humorous.

Rood can only testify to the half naked, shot in the leg, then shot in the back incident that has nothing at all to do with this one.

He claims that there was a larger attack with more than just one VC and the VC was a adult.

This flies in the face of all the other accounts, plus he works for the Chicago Trib and is a lefty supporter.

To me, the photo of Kerry and others looks like a made up composite...Maybe photo experts on FR can give opinions.

No doubt that Kerry will have some of the left wing meda members come to his defense. But, the bottom line is that the Kerry campaign has been completely derailed. They are now forced to be on the defense, and they are being forced to look nasty, mean spirited, and desperate. So much for the first "punch". The second "punch" will come when Zell Miller nominates President Bush at the RNC Convention.

Since Kerry on already "on the ropes", the knockout punch is only a matter of time.

If I were a demoRat, I would be in a deep, deep, state of depression by now..........

The article is totally dishonest. It doesn't prove anything. What it does is set up the events and compare the versions of the events told by Kerry and the SBV.

notice the BREAK in the graphic... it is used to denote a LARGE area missing from the graphic so it can be shown on one page, ALSO the there are NO times posted in 5 through 9 like there are in 1 through 4 posing more questions than answers!!!

"In the acknowledgments to his book, Brinkley suggests that he took at least some of the passages from an unfinished book proposal Kerry prepared some time after November 1971, more than two years after he had returned home from Vietnam."

Is Brinkley admitting he lied for Kerry to spice up the "biography"?

I thought it was from a diary not an "unfinished book"?

this story is actually pretty hard-hitting, considering it's source...have we ever seen the WaPo run anything that has brought up this many points of contention without dismissing them entirely? I smell smoke...

Bemeber, thuis is in the Saturday edition where fewer people will read it, and where the MSM TV networks won't get the coverage like a weekday broadcast.

Notice how Postspeak works. Author says 3 out of 5 skippers who were there disagree with Skerry. Actually, one is dead and the other is Skerry, so what we really have is all living skippers disagreeing with fearless John.

I get my laughs wherever I can find them! The all-important typewriter was undoubtedly for writing up those glowing reports of HIS exploits. (I keep wondering what he did for clean underwear. LOL)

LOOL!

I guess the lawyer route didn't work!

So now they have to get people to write their accounts of the Swift Boat actions so that the pundits have something to hold onto, to quote, to bolster their deep tendency to defend the indefensible (as near as I can tell, the mainstay of the democrats since bill klinton). There, creedo, as it were. DEFEND, at all costs, including the TRUTH, the INDENSIBLE.

America's premiere democrats, busy, forever, DEFENDING that which is INDENSIBLE! lol

Imagine a man, a writer, publishing HIS account of the Swift Boat activities and then REFUSING all interviews and open debate.

And imagine, a major newpaper even printing such an article, knowing full well the author refuses to defend his words, like the Tribune did.

My goodness...are the klinton era groupies so far gone they cannot even see the horror of this?

GO SWIFT BOAT VETS against Kerry!

You are our 'David', and even tho you only want your stories out there to counteract the hurt and lies kerry forced you to live with for YEARS to prevent this creep from EVER becoming our Commander in Chief, you are exposing our mainstream press corp in a way that has NEVER BEEN done before. You are SLAYING the agenda driven press corp, or 'GOLIATH', even as you inform us of kerry's pathetic, cowardly character!

I salute you! I love you! And I only wish I could shake your hands, and thank you over and over for stepping forward, undergoing the horrific democrat led slime machine, in order to warn all of us of kerry's character.
