Mexico detains 8 from Armenia, Iran, Iraq
By Anna Cearley UNION-TRIBUNE STAFF WRITER August 20, 2004
Mexican authorities detained eight people from Armenia, Iran and Iraq at a Mexicali hotel yesterday after exchanging information with the FBI, Mexican police said.
The six men and two women, one of whom is eight months pregnant, were found about 11 a.m. by members of the State Preventive Police at the hotel, in the city's center.
The continuing threat of a terrorist attack has raised concerns that terrorists could try to enter the United States from Mexico.
Mexican immigration officials are interviewing the detainees and examining their documents to determine whether they are in the country legally. U.S. authorities are interested in learning if any have ties to groups intent on harming the United States.
Based on initial interviews, most of those being held appear to have come from Armenia after fleeing religious persecution in Iran and Iraq, said Alfredo Arenas Moreno, the international liaison for the State Preventive Police.
The group appears to have flown from Moscow to Mexico City and then to have made its way north to Mexicali.
Baja California has historically been a conduit for Middle Easterners, particularly Iraqi Catholics, or Chaldeans, some of whom try to seek asylum in the United States. It wasn't clear if any of the detainees are Chaldean.
One of the detainees appeared to be a smuggler, and another was overseeing the group's transportation from Armenia to Mexicali, according to the State Preventive Police.
Four apparently are legal residents of the United States, and Mexican authorities were preparing to arrange interviews for the FBI.

Called to fight: Allan Wall reflects on costs of leaving home, family, going to war
Alan Wall is the excellent reporter who lives in Mexico. George Putnam was over-the-top upset with Wall being activated.
Exactly. We cannot count on Mexico to police our borders. They can;'t even maintain an economy. So their people are up here strip mining ours.
I don't hear much about W buddying-up with Vincente Fox much anymore...
Oh, great. Now they're sending in pregnant women so the kids will be American citizens and the so-called parents (who's your daddy?) can stay if caught. Hey, it's worked for decades with illegal Mexicans.
Yeah, Meixco wants to dump its surplus population, misfits, and criminals into this country. This has and will greatly harm our country.
W is too busy with the election. I wish W would change his mind on Amnesty for Mexican nationals, and other illegal aliens.
I wonder why they were in Moscow?
I hope the US is kinda late in getting there by at least a month. The woman who is 8 months pregnant would have an Iraqi-Mexican, Irani-Mexican or Armini-Mexican.
I give up - with the meager information given this makes no sense whatsoever.

I can't back this up with an article, however I do remember reading quite a few times that MEs coming from Mexico were always Christians according to Mexico.
Do the Iraquis, Iranians and Armenians all speak Farsi? Evidently, 4 spoke English. Can you imagine all the jibberish that went on in this group?
I am like you. Why did those residents come through Mexico using smugglers? It doesn't make sense.
Interesting to say the least.
Token capture by good ol' Mexico to get a pat on the back from the White House.
Thanks for the links. I missed some of them.

I have not seen this anywhere else. Looks like all eyes open for a change.
Borderwide alert issued for suspected al-Qaida (08/18/2004)
EL PASO, Texas (AP) _ The F-B-I has issued an alert for a suspected al-Qaida member who may try to cross the U-S border through Arizona or Texas.
Adnan Gulshair El Shukrijumah (shoo-kree-joo-MAH') is suspected of being an al-Qaida cell leader and has been wanted by the U-S since 2003.
The F-B-I in El Paso says the latest information places the 29-year-old suspect in Honduras with the intent of crossing the U-S/Mexican border.
The Saudi Arabia native has not been charged in the United States with any crimes.
U-S authorities are investigating whether there are any links between El Shukrijumah and other terror suspects.
The F-B-I says El Shukrijumah speaks English and carries a Guyanese passport, but might also try to enter the U-S with a Saudi, Canadian or Trinidadian passport.
Scratch one anchor baby.
Also protecting their own interests. If too many terrorists go through the Mexican border and gain asylum, or do mayhem, the people in the US just might wake up and start screaming to close down the border. Mexico doesn't want that, for heaven's sake.
Don't you find it horrifying that every terrorist in the world is coming to America through the borders of Mexico? And that our elected leaders don't care? Unbelivable.
This administration has made it clear that our voices don't count when the subject concerns Mexico. He is leaving America wide open to attack. GWB will not get my vote in November.
