Three numbers to watch 1000,9-3,9-11

There are three numbers coming that the Bush team should be prepared for: 1000, 9-3, 9-11

1000 is the number of troop deaths likely to hit before the November elections. I believe the media has been lying fairly low on Iraq lately, and it makes me curious. Najaf is a huge hotspot right now and should be dominating headlines but it isnt, why is that? Sure its gets plenty of attention, but not quite like it was in May. This leads me to believe that they are cleaning there guns and are planning on making 1000 a magical number and they probably have some sort of magical number comparisons primed for attack.

9-3 is the jobs report after Bush's acceptance speech on 9-2, if it isnt over say 200,000 the press will use the "low" job growth numbers to overshadow any post-convention coverage he may have, a tricky situation for Bush and Rove to work with and its completely out of there hands.

9-11 is the only number that will help Bush, but watch out for a VFW style protest to happen, I wouldnt doubt it if a few of Teresa Heinz's sycophant 9-11 families due some sort of back turning on Bush, but unlike the VFW soldiers who called Kerry a liar and turned there backs to him the press will jump on this like flys to sh*t or bees to honey.

Unfortunately all of these situations will be outside of Bush's control and I see no way that Bush and Co. can counteract them, but there is one good thing and thats the fact the electorate is so divided and the Republicans are so united that even with all that the race will still be close.

Hand wringing isn't going to help anyone. Bush has the better proposals and positions in this campaign. Voting for him is the only intelligent option in this election. Kerry's support is based on hatred and fear. Most Americans are not hateful and afraid, and that is why I believe Bush will win.

Whatever the numbers are--within reason--won't change the outcome of the election.

I don't think the race will be close at all. It'll come down to security and there's only one answer: President George W. Bush. Time tested and proven.

Your right handwringing isnt going to help, but you have to be prepared no matter what the conclusion will be.

"I believe the media has been lying fairly low on Iraq lately, and it makes me curious. "

The media in my area is pretty much pro-war. The national columnists in op-ed are just about solidly pro-war. They don't want to be wrong either.

Have the liberal 9-11 widows filed their lawsuits yet? Are there any statute of limitations issues that would require them to do so before 9/11?

The greedy b-tches.

Good observations. But I believe it'll be Bush in a landslide. Here's why:
1. A substantial bump from a successful Convention & speech.
2. Third anniversary of 9-11. People will recall the leadership he exhibited in the days following the attacks.
3. (Most importantly) The Debates. Bush will attempt to stay away from Kerry's war record (Hot Potato) and focus on his sparse record in the Senate. The flip flops, etc. Meanwhile, Dick Cheney will mop up Edwards. Cheney is far more seasoned and knowledgeable in foreign affairs than Edwards. Edwards may be good at "splitting hairs" with his legalese talk, but Cheney will ulimately prevail.

I believe Kerry will be shown for the buffoon he really is. Shallow and no substance.

Fact of the matter is that there have been 720 combat deaths in Iraq to date. The other deaths are due to accidents, illness, etc.

This is in no way to minimize the loss of a single warrior.

You and I may understand the differenace between combat and non-combat deaths but unfortunately most Americans dont, not to mention the fact that no matter the cause of death they are still heroes to me.

We cannot allow the media to mischaracterize the sacrifice.

The truth is the truth.

Didn't the Iraqi government ban the press from entering Najaf? This would account for the news blackout on Iraq. If they did, it was a smart move. Don't give Sadr a sympathetic press.

Of course the press will make an issue out of 1000 deaths. I believe it would under any administration. We make milestones for everything in our lives.

Are jobs the primary concern of Americans right now? Were there not multiple polls, which indicated that security comes before the economy? You can't spend it if you’re dead.

Will the 9-11 anniversary help President Bush? It will remind the nation, and that may be enough to keep GWB in office.

Please note that there are still >40,000 folks "sacrificed" on the highways of the US every year. Only a ~ two percent reduction should result in 1,000 "saved".

Perhaps an appeal to not use cell phones and not drive while drunk and leave a little more room between vehicles until the troops return would make up for the sacrifices being made for the benefit of the US.

I really am not mentioning these numbers to say they will be definate negatives or to cry doom and gloom but use it as an excercize in thought on what will be happening. The press as we now it will turn hardball on a dime with anything negative against Bush, especially during the post convention time period when more Americans will be paying attention to the race.

About 1,000 troops are lost to training accidents, etc. EVERY year. Nothing at all to do with combat.
