A leader of one of the major protest groups planning to disrupt the GOP convention said Monday she will not instruct her members to refrain from violent attacks against New York City police, delegates or city residents during a planned 250,000 person march on the night before the convention.
Referring to planned protests as "a battle," Tanya Mayo, national coordinator for the protest group "Not in Our Name," told radio host Sean Hannity that her group alone has 30,000 members, but that other groups could swell that number by hundreds of thousands during a planned march up 7th Ave. to the area around Madison Square Garden.
Contending that there's "a real hatred" for President Bush's agenda, Mayo said protesters have a right to assemble in Central Park after leaving the Garden area, a plan that New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg has banned.
Asked if her group would "follow the rule of law" if Bloomberg's ban stays in force, Mayo told Hannity, "I think it's ironic that you would ask that question when we've got a president that actually has sacked the rule of law."
"Look, we've got a gang in the White House right now that are rounding up immigrants, putting people in detention," she insisted. "Trust me, [Bush] is a bad guy."
The rest of the exchange went like this:
HANNITY: Will you be non-violent with the police?
MAYO: I'm gonna answer that in the best way that I can. I can't answer it as a yes or no answer. What I can say, is . . . .
HANNITY: Wait a minute, wait a minute. You can. Will you encourage people in your protest not to be violent with the police - yes or no?
MAYO: People are concerned with the fate of the people of the world . . .
HANNITY: Yes or no? Answer the question, Tanya.
MAYO: If you want to do this interview and you want to hear what I have to say, then allow me to answer the question. . . . If people are concerned about safety and disruption in the streets, then we need to actually look at who will be held responsible for something like that. And that's Mayor Bloomberg and his administration for refusing the right of people to assemble.
HANNITY: Now I'll ask the question again. Will you encourage your members to be non-violent?
MAYO: I think our members are a very diverse group of people and individuals will have to make a decision what lines they choose to cross at any given point.
HANNITY: But as a paid leader of the group "Not In Our Name," as a leader of the peace movement, will you encourage members in your group not to be violent?
MAYO: Like I said, those things will unfold as the days come and we'll definitely give you a call back if we have any other answers. . . . We have respected everything up to this point. The only people who have sacked the rule of law are the gang in the White House.
Editor's note:
I have a couple of friends on the job here in NYC and let me tell you, they are ready. there is a zero tolerance for bullsh!t by these so called peace lovers. No one is in the mood for this nonsense.
The thing that amazes me is the attitude of appeasement by City Hall. Mennino in Boston was right -- put the filthy freaks in cages on the West Side highway dammit.
Companies in the city are making plans to let people work from home, etc... How about forcing the mayor to be more vocal about what will happen to demonstrators, how about some threats coming from city hall... how about a set of balls Bloomberg. Ugh, he disgusts me.
Everyone at the convention needs to be armed . . . with video cameras. Film the filth and their antics and post it to the internet. The mainstream media won't do it, so we must.
In other words, "I believe in peace, and if you disagree with me, I'm going to break your face."
In other words, "I believe in peace, and if you disagree with me, I'm going to break your face."
Boy! I tell you! You try to live a good decent life, and it's idiots like this that get face time on TV. Just horrible.
The sure come out from under their rocks, don't they!
Alas I have to go to work during that week. I wish I could stay home but no dice. But if any protestor gets in my way there will be hell to pay. I heard they will be chaining themselves together to block traffic again and that by doing that they will keep the NYPD occupied trying to cut thru the chain thereby letting other protestors incite more violence. These animals are SICK!!!

Hatred is the most accessible and comprehensive of all unifying agents. It pulls and whirls the individual away from his own self, makes him oblivious of his weal and future, frees him of jealousies and self-seeking. He becomes an anonymous particle with a craving to fuse and coalesce with his like into one flaming mass... Mass movements can rise and spread without belief in a God, but never without belief in a devil... Common hatred unites the most heterogeneous elements. To share a common hatred, with an enemy even, is to infect him with a feeling of kinship, and thus sap his powers of resistance... We have it from Hitler... that the genius of a great leader consists of concentrating all hatred on a single foe. [pp 85-87]
Yes they do. Slithering out from the depths of the sewer is more like it.
I wonder what they are so upset about?
Just call out the NY National Guard and handle it like they did the Draft Riots in 1863 if anyone gets violent: mostly infantry and cavalry, but also light artillery firing canister down the Avenues.
Don't forget the spray bottle with five-gallon thermos attachment filled with steaming hot coffee!
Include the Rumpus Society, and all known financial backers, including Mrs. Kerry. Also, organizing and/or coordinating with groups that are known to be crossing state lines and international boundaries (some hate group in Canada is said to be coming here, the same group that rolled marbles under police horses' hooves in Toronto) with the intent to disrupt political procedings is a federal crime. And let us not forget that police animals are considered to be officers of the law like their human counterparts, so injuring a police horse is a serious crime. Just wait until some NYPD horse gets a broken ankle (God forbid) - there will be some serious baton action as a result, and I think most Americans would sit back and laugh at these scumbags for instigating it.
If Fox would run a "Temptation Island" marathon during the convention most of these trouble makers would stay home.
Please, go ahead and be violent. NY Cops will wipe the street with your handcuffed bodies. One thing about NY Cops, don't mess with them. Best in the world.
You bet and they'll be insignificant. Their numbers will not be large as she says and law enforcement is not gonna let them get away with blatantly breaking the law or allowing themselves to be attacked. Hope the protestors are prepared to get back what they think they are prepared to give.
< chiefwiggums>Gonna beat some hippies, Gonna beat 'em good. I tell you those hippies will be eating baton wood...< /chiefwiggums>
IIRC on the last day they burned an effigy of a two-faced man. One face of course was GWB, and the other was John Kerry.
I'd be suprised if there were more than 100 total protesters, and even more suprised if Conservatives, or Republicans were even 20% of that.
They're opposed to violence they don't like, yet FOR violence they DO like.
