A new poll commissioned by the National Jewish Democratic Council says American Jews will still vote overwhelmingly for the Democratic presidential candidate, John Kerry, despite US President George W. Bush's policies toward Israel, which have been widely praised by the Jewish community.
The poll, released on Monday, said American Jews preferred Kerry to Bush by a 75 to 22 percent margin. The survey of 817 likely Jewish voters was conducted by Greenberg Quinlan Rosner Research between July 26 and 28, and has a margin of error of +/- 3.5 percent.
Respondents said in 2000 they had voted for Vice President Al Gore over Bush by a similar margin of 76 to 21 percent.
Exit polls in 2000 showed Gore won 79 percent of the Jewish vote, and Bush 19 percent.
"The White House and (President Bush's political adviser) Karl Rove in particular have expended a lot of resources on this Jewish vote. Just like with Hispanics, they've come up with zero," said Ira Forman, executive director of NJDC.
Matthew Brooks, executive director of the Republican Jewish Coalition, a rival group, discounted the survey's results since the poll was taken during the Democratic Convention in Boston.
"I discount these findings because this poll was taken right in the middle of the Democratic Convention, right in the middle of a massive deluge of Kerry press coverage," Brooks said.
"We stand firmly committed to the notion that President Bush will do substantially better among Jewish voters than he did in 2000," Brooks added.
Another survey of American Jewish opinion in January found that 31 percent of Jews would support Bush when matched with Kerry, who was not yet the nominee at the time.
The new NJDC survey said 66 percent found Kerry to be better on the issue of Israel, while 34 percent found Bush to be. Only 23 percent of respondents felt the country was moving in the right direction, while 77 percent said it was on the wrong track. Twenty-five percent approved strongly or somewhat of the way Bush is handling his job as president, while 75 percent disapproved strongly or somewhat.
A new national Zogby survey released Monday showed Kerry ahead of Bush 47 to 43 percent. Without Independent Ralph Nader and other candidates the lead stretched to 50 to 43 percent.
"if 76% of American jews like Kerry over Bush there are some dumb-assed American jews"
Dumb-a$$ed secular Jews like the ones working for the ACLU and the media. The ones who gave up their religion and only use it when it is convenient for them. Orthodox Jews would probably not want to see kerry win (IMHO).
Looks like Kerry did it! Got to hand it to him for getting the Palestinians and Jews together on something--supporting him for president! Double Talk does work--so it seems.
What else would you expect from a DEMOCRAT poll?
The fact of the matter is the Jews in America and their interest are different from those in Israel. I dont understand why but it once was explained to me by a Jewish friend. He went as far to say that the Jews in America could care less about Israel at this time.
Shouldn't he be in jail for theft of classified documents?
The Democrat Party is a hodgepodge of conflicting social dysfunction.
If the President picks up 10% of the Jewish vote from 2000 and five percent more of the black vote, it'll be a landslide. And I do think he is doing better among both of these constituencies.
It's the old Jews from NY and NJ that are responsible for putting FLA in play in every election now. And many of them are registered in both states, so they can vote Dem twice.
We'll find out soon enough, but I predict that Bush will get at least 35% of the total Jewish vote (10% better than in 2000). And younger (under 35) Jews will keep the trend toward the GOP going.
Many of the Jews in America care more about abortion rights and gay marriage then they do about their homeland.
Jewish Americans will vote for Kerry at their own peril. Kerry is clearly going to take the French approach toward diplomacy and that will result in a hostile environment for Jews everywhere.
France is already having it's share of problems with anti-semitism and appeasing those here in the USA who hold such sentiments (as the French do) will only encourage the perpetrators. You can expect to see more anti-semitism displayed in this country following a Kerry win.
I know a number of Jewish persons who are quite liberal and I have never been able to reason with them. Some people just have to relearn the lessons of history it seems to me.
Once "W" got into the White House the Israelis were allowed to behave a bit more unrestrained against the palestinian terrorists. Under Clinton their hands were always tied. Kerry would return to such policies and as a result more innocent Israeli civilians will be slaughtered and the world will of course as always blame the Jews because they are so unreasonable.
Thank you for your thoughtful words. I too have several Jewish friends who have become very pro-Bush since 2000, AND who realize which candidate is Israel's best friend. They are, like many people who come out of the darkness of the left, bright, knowledgeable, and willing to openly say why they support President Bush!
Funny that 75% of the mutts over at Democratic Underground think the Jews set up McGreevey via the Mossad!
Personally, I am looking forward to popping a bottle of champagne at about nine o'clock Eastern time on November 2nd as President Bush wins in a landslide. The weeping and wailing and gnashing of teeth of Carville / Begala / Matthews / Woodruff / Clift et al is going to be so sweet!
Hey, I can dream can't I? In the meantime my money and my support goes to George W Bush!
If the result goes the other way, I will be drinking something more potent!
ARE YOU F'N KIDDING ME?!
This is ridiculous. If the Jewish vote actually is anywhere near this figure (66%) or higher, I will stop worrying about the Israeli/PLO conflict, because it will be hopeless.
Depends on the defintion of educated.
Great analogy!
I grew up in the Northeast US so this sounds about right. Personally, I don't know any Conservative Jews; the ones I know are all 'pre-epiphany' David Horowitz-types (ie. Leftist/Socialist). In fact, the only Conservative Jews I've ever met have been here on FR (all 20 of them).
