A new poll commissioned by the National Jewish Democratic Council says American Jews will still vote overwhelmingly for the Democratic presidential candidate, John Kerry, despite US President George W. Bush's policies toward Israel, which have been widely praised by the Jewish community.
The poll, released on Monday, said American Jews preferred Kerry to Bush by a 75 to 22 percent margin. The survey of 817 likely Jewish voters was conducted by Greenberg Quinlan Rosner Research between July 26 and 28, and has a margin of error of +/- 3.5 percent.
Respondents said in 2000 they had voted for Vice President Al Gore over Bush by a similar margin of 76 to 21 percent.
Exit polls in 2000 showed Gore won 79 percent of the Jewish vote, and Bush 19 percent.
"The White House and (President Bush's political adviser) Karl Rove in particular have expended a lot of resources on this Jewish vote. Just like with Hispanics, they've come up with zero," said Ira Forman, executive director of NJDC.
Matthew Brooks, executive director of the Republican Jewish Coalition, a rival group, discounted the survey's results since the poll was taken during the Democratic Convention in Boston.
"I discount these findings because this poll was taken right in the middle of the Democratic Convention, right in the middle of a massive deluge of Kerry press coverage," Brooks said.
"We stand firmly committed to the notion that President Bush will do substantially better among Jewish voters than he did in 2000," Brooks added.
Another survey of American Jewish opinion in January found that 31 percent of Jews would support Bush when matched with Kerry, who was not yet the nominee at the time.
The new NJDC survey said 66 percent found Kerry to be better on the issue of Israel, while 34 percent found Bush to be. Only 23 percent of respondents felt the country was moving in the right direction, while 77 percent said it was on the wrong track. Twenty-five percent approved strongly or somewhat of the way Bush is handling his job as president, while 75 percent disapproved strongly or somewhat.
A new national Zogby survey released Monday showed Kerry ahead of Bush 47 to 43 percent. Without Independent Ralph Nader and other candidates the lead stretched to 50 to 43 percent.
How about a survey of Jewish opinion conducted by an independent source?
Again I reiterate that, if you wish to express something like this as an opinion ("IMO, most Jews..."), I have no problem with that. It's when you present an assertion like this as fact that you need to have evidence to back it up.
Guess you've never been to to the religion forum.
There are FReepers that only post on WOD threads; FReepers that prefer the Immigration threads: FReepers that confine their FReeping to "Caption this" threads.
So Red the Rose.
Let me see if I can get it with a "perfect" dust jacket.
LOL!
Some folks never learn from history.
I can get an original, 1st edition in GOOD condition,
but NO dust jacket. Geeeeeez. The other one available
with dust jacket, is the 1962 reprint. I do not mind
spending his money on out of print books, so long as the
books come with almost perfect dust jackets. LOL!
Sorry, I just found your post to me.
"When you retire?"
You make it sound like you're close to retirement,
and here I had you figured (pictured) more youthful. :)
How about this!
It took me 2 separate orders,
but I have an original 1st Edition
in GREAT condition, and I ordered
the other tattered 1st edition with
the "moderately stained" ORIGINAL dust jacket.
Total price including shipment of both: under $50!
Thanks bourbon.
This is a wonderful find!
hey, you're welcome!
I hope it's more of a novel for MEN.
LOL.
I reckon it is, cause YOU suggested it.
I don't know anyone from the WWII generation that didn't support FDR, including some that I grew up around that were outspoken against Jews.
My mother, now in her 70's, is still convinced that Jewish=rich=Republican because we lived in a small city and many of the businesses were started and owned by Jews. I have no idea what the Jewish political leanings were in my birthplace, but my brother and I were raised Christian and both had best friends that were Jewish. One of my Jewish friends married a Christian man and they had two children and celebrate both religions.
As for some comments I've read on the internet about Jews being anti-Christian...I've never met any that were and have worked and socialized with many over the years.
Here's another interesting thread, especially Cinnamon Girl's comments about FDR

Two words: JUST DAMN.
When will American Jews wake up from their leftist slumber an realize that they've been brainwashed ? If President Bush's aggressive pursuit of the War on terror, against the very same Muslim terrorism that threatens to destroy their homeland, doesn't convince the Jews that the conservatives are their real allies, then I don't know if they can ever be reached.
I'm about ready to declare them unreachable, and write their vote off entirely, the same as I have no respect for the Black vote because 90% of all American blacks consistently refuse to stand up and take responsibility for their lives and their country's future.
You're right, check out the comments in Post 430. Clearly the hatred is the domain of the left.
No, it is not theoretically a good concept, it is intrinsically and unavoidably totalitarian. There is nothing beautiful or good about it at all.
I have a Jewish friend, in fact my best friend, who thinks the same. Even though he has figured out what the end result of socialism is, he continues to think the theory is beautiful. Well, it's beautiful to those who think of humanity as machine like or perhaps as hive insects.
Having lived both lives, I would venture to say that Jewish and Christian morality are essentially the same.
Because they are more educated than other ethnic groups by choice and because they are traditionally extremely hard workers.
Mark Twain noted the disproportionate achievments of Jews in 19th century America, but had the good sense to admire them for that.
I'm sorry to disagree Sam but the Jewish support for abortion as just one example is the inverse that it is for Christians.
I'm not Jewish but have known scores around the world and about the only really conservative ones I've ever known are here on FR...and God bless ya'll btw.
OK, I will agree with you on liberal vs conservative moral issues, clearly Jews have traditionally leaned to the left for perhaps 100 years now. Although I have hope that this left leaning tradition will change now that Jewish people are no longer excluded from so much of American society. OTOH, I have fear that American society in general is leaning further left s time goes by.
But I had meant that Jewish morality is similar to Christian in that both religions are initially based on the Bible, the same God, share such things as the 10 commandments, the Golden Rule, etc. So at least many of the foundations are the same. Thanks for the reply, btw.

Good points... I guess I mispoke... I should have said "utopian concept," rather than "good concept."
The theoretical result of a utopian society would be an end to want and depravation of any type. Again, the problem is that it is completely contrary to human nature.
And you're right... The only way to deliver on a "utopian society" would be through a totalitarian government. Or through the direct intervention of The Lord.

Just like there are pro-abortion Catholics, there are pro-abortion Jews. The thing to remember is that there are different levels of observance in the hearts of Catholics, as there are with Jews. In the case of Jews, however, there are actually terms that describe the levels of observance... Reform Jews are the most numerous, and they are the least observant. Conservative Jews are fewer, but more observant. The smallest number are the most observant, which are Orthodox. You will find that abortion is abhorrant to Orthodox (and most Conservative) Jews, applicable only when the mother's life is in danger.
