Poll: 75% of US Jews favor Kerry over Bush

A new poll commissioned by the National Jewish Democratic Council says American Jews will still vote overwhelmingly for the Democratic presidential candidate, John Kerry, despite US President George W. Bush's policies toward Israel, which have been widely praised by the Jewish community.

The poll, released on Monday, said American Jews preferred Kerry to Bush by a 75 to 22 percent margin. The survey of 817 likely Jewish voters was conducted by Greenberg Quinlan Rosner Research between July 26 and 28, and has a margin of error of +/- 3.5 percent.

Respondents said in 2000 they had voted for Vice President Al Gore over Bush by a similar margin of 76 to 21 percent.

Exit polls in 2000 showed Gore won 79 percent of the Jewish vote, and Bush 19 percent.

"The White House and (President Bush's political adviser) Karl Rove in particular have expended a lot of resources on this Jewish vote. Just like with Hispanics, they've come up with zero," said Ira Forman, executive director of NJDC.

Matthew Brooks, executive director of the Republican Jewish Coalition, a rival group, discounted the survey's results since the poll was taken during the Democratic Convention in Boston.

"I discount these findings because this poll was taken right in the middle of the Democratic Convention, right in the middle of a massive deluge of Kerry press coverage," Brooks said.

"We stand firmly committed to the notion that President Bush will do substantially better among Jewish voters than he did in 2000," Brooks added.

Another survey of American Jewish opinion in January found that 31 percent of Jews would support Bush when matched with Kerry, who was not yet the nominee at the time.

The new NJDC survey said 66 percent found Kerry to be better on the issue of Israel, while 34 percent found Bush to be. Only 23 percent of respondents felt the country was moving in the right direction, while 77 percent said it was on the wrong track. Twenty-five percent approved strongly or somewhat of the way Bush is handling his job as president, while 75 percent disapproved strongly or somewhat.

A new national Zogby survey released Monday showed Kerry ahead of Bush 47 to 43 percent. Without Independent Ralph Nader and other candidates the lead stretched to 50 to 43 percent.

From everything I have read about Port Gibson,
it seems that the races live almost exclusively
among their own.

I used to search the real estate listings,
and invariably, the grand, old homes seemed
to be on one side (or portion) of the town and,
are rarely mixed in with other lesser grand homes,
which is NOT the case in Vicksburg for example.

parts of Mississippi are majority black....Jackson and the Delta (some counties are 90% black) and probably Port Gibson and Natchez.....the Colombus black loam belt as well.

the lower third and the northeast are the "whitest" mainly because the plantation economy never took hold much


Mississippi is fairly segregated but more by money than race now which still gives the appearance of racial segregation by default obviously.

I hate to say it but aside from the Coast and Tupelo and Madison and Rankin counties and perhaps Hattiesburg and Oxford, the rest of the state has suffered serious economic and social decline.

I still love it though and could live there were I not bound by my many obligations here in the sortofSouth.

I would get 300% more for my money and I don't mind being armed....that's old hat for me considering where all I've lived.

I never could figure out why Jews vote for rats but a couple things that really struck me as clues in the last few years:

The Ashcroft confirmation hearings where one Jewish Senator after another scowled at him while denigrating his Christianity flat out saying he is unqualified for the position because his beliefs were too strong.

The scowling at Mel Gibson with "how dare you make a movie based on the new testament".

There is an extreme hatred/fear of Christians and Christianity among most American Jews that never really becomes obvious until something or someone Christian threatens to bubble up to the mainstream.

That much is fact. I'm sure the reasons for it are more complex than I can guess at. It is ironic that if Christianity met the doom that most Jews wish for it that their own doom would swiftly follow.

Funny, I'd imagine that most American Jews consider America to be their "homeland." I know for a fact that this one does, and I'd hazzard a guess that most of the other Jews on FR do as well.

You have already suggested that I shouldn't trust my eyes and ears in determining what the majority of American Jews believe by what I see and hear from the Jews that are voiced in the mainstream media. I suspect that you'd tell me that when I witnessed one Jewish senator after another scowling at John Ashcroft during his confirmation hearings that I shouldn't consider that as the views of the majority of Jewish Americans. You probably wouldn't want me to consider the title of the thread or look at past voting history to determine how the majority of American Jews feel about Christianity.
