A new poll commissioned by the National Jewish Democratic Council says American Jews will still vote overwhelmingly for the Democratic presidential candidate, John Kerry, despite US President George W. Bush's policies toward Israel, which have been widely praised by the Jewish community.
The poll, released on Monday, said American Jews preferred Kerry to Bush by a 75 to 22 percent margin. The survey of 817 likely Jewish voters was conducted by Greenberg Quinlan Rosner Research between July 26 and 28, and has a margin of error of +/- 3.5 percent.
Respondents said in 2000 they had voted for Vice President Al Gore over Bush by a similar margin of 76 to 21 percent.
Exit polls in 2000 showed Gore won 79 percent of the Jewish vote, and Bush 19 percent.
"The White House and (President Bush's political adviser) Karl Rove in particular have expended a lot of resources on this Jewish vote. Just like with Hispanics, they've come up with zero," said Ira Forman, executive director of NJDC.
Matthew Brooks, executive director of the Republican Jewish Coalition, a rival group, discounted the survey's results since the poll was taken during the Democratic Convention in Boston.
"I discount these findings because this poll was taken right in the middle of the Democratic Convention, right in the middle of a massive deluge of Kerry press coverage," Brooks said.
"We stand firmly committed to the notion that President Bush will do substantially better among Jewish voters than he did in 2000," Brooks added.
Another survey of American Jewish opinion in January found that 31 percent of Jews would support Bush when matched with Kerry, who was not yet the nominee at the time.
The new NJDC survey said 66 percent found Kerry to be better on the issue of Israel, while 34 percent found Bush to be. Only 23 percent of respondents felt the country was moving in the right direction, while 77 percent said it was on the wrong track. Twenty-five percent approved strongly or somewhat of the way Bush is handling his job as president, while 75 percent disapproved strongly or somewhat.
A new national Zogby survey released Monday showed Kerry ahead of Bush 47 to 43 percent. Without Independent Ralph Nader and other candidates the lead stretched to 50 to 43 percent.
I look forward to learning the actual voting stats of the American Jews post election. Meanwhile I will believe little of what I read, especially coming from the left.

American Jews are consistent in their support for Marxist-Socialists ... they like the idea of the government protecting them and caring for them - and that is how they vote - Israel does not matter much to them. Read Horowitz's "Radical Son."
I am Jewish so I am qualified to answer here.
Jews tend to be part of academia or other professions which tend to tilt towards liberal issues. It is not as though they do not care for Israel. On the contrary, Jews in the US tend to support Israel by sending money, buying bonds, planting trees, yadda yadda.... To many,(76%) this is enough. Most Jews in the US live in LA, NY, Miami and other heavily liberal areas.
We speak of a strong Israel. However, when you listen to liberals they want Israel around for one reason. So that they can go there for three weeks to see the country when they retire.
Most Americans that have already been to Israel see Israelis as egotistical, pushy, bossy people that cannot stand Americans. I lived there for a year and can attest to that. I have friends that are Israeli. I also met Israelis that would make the French look good as far as being rude and obnoxious.
I guess the way to look at it, Jews, as Americans vote liberal for the most part. Whether it is because of how we arrived here in the early 1900's or because of our environment, American Jews vote as their parents voted and grandparents voted.
My grandparents were neolibs. My parents were neolibs and until I learned for myself what is happening to this country, not to mention surviving a bomb blast in Jerusalem a few years back, I was a neolib.
My parents are now Conservative.

The subtext is that Bush has gained support among Jewish voters. Gore won 79%. Kerry can expect 75%. That means a shift toward Bush. In a tight, 50-50 election, that means a Bush win.

I think the 'Jewish vote' is a misnomer. There are three seperate 'Jewish blocks' Orthodox Jews will support GWB over JFK, and they will do so because of their religious dedication to Israel. The moderate practicing Jews will split their votes; some care more about Israel, some care more about their leftism. The issue is that the biggest block are the essentially atheist non-practicing Jews whose real religion is socialism/communism. This groups is disproportionately large in the Jewish Community. They will unanimously support Kerry; in fact this group has an sharp animosity towards Israel. They want it destroyed, because Israel's continued existance is a refutation of their socialist religion.
And I say all this as an atheist myself. It is just that my atheism is not driven by a service to evil socialism.

79%. That means the polls are showing a 4% shift toward Bush. Thats what the article tells you if you read between the lines.

If Jean Kerrí can win both the Jewish and Arab vote by overwhelming margins, he should be able to bring about a utopian peace in the Middle East, especially if he can cruise through the region on Christmas Eve in his swift boat.
