Tropical Storm Earl? Maybe it'll turn into a hurricane and find the Dixie Chicks, eh? ...referring to the Chicks' song, "Killing Earl."

The projected storm track

And to the people in Punta Gorda those words have taken on a whole new meaning.

I wonder if our high tech predicting has done us some harm.

Those folks in Punta Gorda weren't as prepared as they might have been because even though forecasters are trying to spin it a little, they did keep saying "Tampa" was the target. I was listening, I'm in Tampa Bay area, and when a newscaster predicted mid-morning on Friday that by the storm would be in the middle of Tampa Bay, my heart sunk.

Of course, anybody that's lived in Florida for any length of time knows hurricane's aren't predictable, but on those weather maps they were drawing straight lines directly to Tampa Bay, using computer models.

They said they were warning that the path wasn't set in stone, but sometimes visual stimuli is so much more power than audio.

IMHO, they need to stop drawing straight lines showing where a storm WILL hit, and go back to showing wider swaths of where a storm might hit.

(Of course, this is no excuse for people that are ordered to evacuate and ignore evacuation orders as was the case of any mobile home owner on the southwest coast of Florida.)
