US anti-war, Arab-American groups sue New York over Central Park rally permit

NEW YORK (AFP) - An Arab-American organization and a group opposed to war and racism filed suit charging they were unconstitutionally denied a permit to hold a protest in Central Park during the upcoming Republican National Convention.

Attorneys for the National Council of Arab Americans (NCA) and ANSWER (Act Now to Stop War and End Racism), filed suit in US District Court in Manhattan accusing Mayor Michael Bloomberg, the New York Police Department and others of violating their right to a permit for the park's Great Lawn.

The groups want to hold a civil rights rally on Central Park's Great Lawn on August 28.

Their suit charges the city is trying to exclude "those who criticize the US government's war program, who stand in solidarity with Arab, Arab American and Muslim people, or who dissent from the policies of ... the Republican Party or the Bush administration," the groups said in a joint statement.

Why does someone need a permit to protest anyhow?

They should just show up.

I'll enjoy the freak-show type photos that are bound to come out of such a "protest."

They never demonstrated against the Arab Muslim terrorists who killed 3000 Americans, did they?

These various political lepers had agreed to a spot where their demonstrations would be held. They pulled out and filed suit at the last minute in order to get an unbounded site from which they can fan out like cockroaches and trash the City of New York.

I hope they fail. But they probably did some judge shopping to get the best chance to damage the City.

P.S. Did you know there's a T-shirt out with your tagline on it?

Is there a body of water (like a pond) in the Central Park? If yes, give them their permit to hold their protest in the pond.
