Can someone explain to me why the storm surge will be worse south of the eye?

It's because the forward velocity of the storm (how fast it's moving towards the coast) adds to the wind effects and storm surge.

Winds are onshore on the right hand side, off shore on the left hand side.

The winds south of the eye will be blowing onshore, piling up water along the coast. North of the eye, the winds will be blowing offshore.

Yeap. When I saw it was upgraded to 4 and would hit much further south... did those areas really prepare?

I hope they are ok. Cape Coral looks to be near the projected landfall. The eye has moved even with Naples already. I don't know why my parents are so hard headed - just moving a few miles in land makes a big difference.

South of the eye means wind will be coming from the southeast and then the East --- this will push the Water in that direction, Directly on to the shore.

I lived in New Orleans when Camille hit Mississippi. It was not a big storm, but incredible winds. I remember they said the wind gust were clocked at 265 and sustained over 200 coming onshore. It had a 25ft storm surge. I believe right before it landed it gained added strength. It broke a lot of measuring instruments. I pray the people of Ft. Myer's are safe.

Thanks. So, basically, it's because the hurricane is rotating counter-clockwise?

Yep. That idiot CNN weather chick(when she wasn't standing still in front of most of Florida on her map) was talking about how she was hoping that the storm didn't run up the East Coast on the inland side, because it would produce lots of flooding. Hello! If it stays offshore, it intensifies as it runs up the East Coast. She ain't the brightest bulb(nor is the reporterette on MSNBC who was standing in 12-18" of wave water on the concrete ledge of a bayfront wall in St. James City.)
