Rush on McGreevy: Sympathy for living a lie
vanity | August 13, 2004 | Vanity

Posted on 08/13/2004 9:53:21 AM PDT by fightinJAG

Okay, please don't flame me. I'm honestly interested in what freepers think about this.

Ever since Rush came back from rehab and started talking about "living a lie" and "not being able to make other people happy" and all that, I've had the uneasy feeling that Rush had "discovered" something more about himself than he was letting on.

Today, listening to Rush as he talked about his empathy for McGreevy, it seemed inevitable to wonder if Rush's empathy (and, please, if you did not hear Rush's comments, realize it's difficult to assess the tone and emotion with which he delivered them) wasn't tied back to his own "living a lie" struggles.

Yes, it would be easy to think that the "lie" was his drug addiction, but . . . I'm posting this because it really seemed as though Rush might be warming up to his own bombshell (whatever that might be).

His commentary was so passionate, in a personal, not political way, that I even wondered if he was (unconsciously) seeing if he could start a thread like this, in order to see what the speculation might be and what the reaction to that speculation might be.

Who heard Rush's opening commentary on McGreevy and what was your reaction/thoughts? Thanks. I'd be interested to know.

I was waiting for someone to imply that I was secretly struggling with my own sexuality to even *think* such thoughts or start *such* a thread. Puh-leaze.

BTW, Rush just said he expected his monologue on McGreevy had caused freepers to make multiple threads of discussion, so maybe it wasn't far-off to think he was sort of throwing something out there to see what the reaction would be.

How can someone so obviously well educated in Engineering
be so absolutely stupid and myopic as you? I hate to tell you but Rush became a success long before you and your buddies here did the research for him. You have to be talking with your butt because your mouth knows better.

We all owe Rush! He was largely instrumental to Bush's election in 2000, nobody worked harder at getting out the truth on the air.

Freerepublic has morphed since the 2000 election into what the dems accuse us of, appearing to be mean spirited and petty. Congratulations!

Personally, I think Rush is just repeating psychobabble that was drilled into him during his rehab. Rehab did change Rush, but not for the better in some aspects, as you can see by his pathetic views on McGreevey. Next thing you know, he'll start saying how it was good for Clinton, personally, to get the secret of Monica out.

That's my take also. Just because you've HAD heart surgery doesn't mean you can perform heart surgery. And just because you have HAD counselling doesn't mean you are now an expert on how to analyze people and counsel them. A little knowledge is a dangerous thing.

In essence he said he felt sympathy for McGreevey, on a personal basis, because coming out because this was tough and was only the first step in straightening out his life.

But the point is McGreevy was forced to come out, and he came OUT about something other than what he will be accused of!

Maybe Rush just used the wrong event to express his feelings about personal struggles.

Something doesn't make sense! Other than I just maybe crazy!

This whole thread is amazing. I thought Rush's comments were fabulous.

Rush has gone through a similar experience with his drug addiction and that has made him a more sympathetic human being. Which is what pain always does. You experience pain -- whether it was your own fault or not -- and it leaves you more aware of others' pain.

This has nothing to do with "psychobabble", it is just a fact of human nature that 8 out of 10 people don't need explained. It has nothing to do with his views on homosexuality in general, his view of the governor's politics, his view of what should happen to the ex-governor -- this is all just on the personal level.

It doesn't require wacky theories about Rush's sexuality or his shoe size. The "difference" the freepers are hearing in his voice is simply the effect of his personal pain, which many have not heard before since, as Rush said, last year he would not have thought this way.

It is possible to grow in personal sensitivity without altering your moral or political views and without being a goofy liberal.

It is possible to sympathize with someone while at the same time recognizing their pain is their own fault. That doesn't mean you excuse them from the just penalty of their bad choice, just that you want them to reap what they sowed and hope the reaping, the pain, has a good effect on them and that they come out on the other side a better person.

Everybody needs to relax. Let Rush change occasionally without becoming loons in response.

That was a previous thread. This thread simply asks if it didn't seem as though Rush was warming up to his own bombshell (whatever it might be).

I have felt differently about Rush ever since he dumped Marta. Some time ago, I saw someone come out of rehab with "self-revelations," and he had to learn a new sense of balance, and lose the concept that family and friends were the enemy. When Rush came back he was just like that guy, and it took me a while to put the two together. One day, I hope Rush finally "gets it."

With McGreevey, there is nothing to understand, or be compassionate about. The guy cheated on his wife, who couldn't attend the inauguration because she was in the hospital giving birth to his baby.

He's a grown man. He should have known his "orientation" a long time ago. I have no sympathy for cheaters, especially ones who come out of the closet after marriage and children. What is he going to do now that he "broke his vows" to his wife? Will he leave her to pursue the gay "lifestyle?"

I'm sorry, but any guy who can get it up to make a baby should be with his wife - that is, if she'll have him. And yes, I'm judging him. What McGreevey did was morally rotten. "Gay American." My @ss!

No one in this thread (so far as I have read) has accused Rush of anything. Just that the question was asked whether it seemed Rush was wanting to go further in his remarks than he did.

He handled his remarks about McG.'s situation as a person with class and compassion.

FYI... I found this site on the web

Not sure if he as ever addressed any of this. However, it sure makes for fascinating reading.

Here is a thought:

Maybe McGreedy is holding out hoping he can work a deal to avoid indictment, or OMG has already worked the deal to avoid indictment on unknown as yet charges.

All the Taxocrats want him to do to earn this is to hold on until November 15, 2004
