Tanker crew foils pirate attack in Malacca Strait
Shipping Times ^ | August 11, 2004 | Shipping News

The crew of an oil tanker foiled a pirate attack on Saturday after robbers tried to board their vessel in the Strait of Malacca, one of the world's busiest shipping lanes, the International Maritime Bureau said in its weekly report.

Pirates approached the tanker, used to carry refined oil products like gasoline, in two speedboats at 1.10 pm local time, the IMB's Piracy Reporting Centre said on its website. The name and size of the ship were not reported.

The crew activated fire hoses, fired signal flares and increased the vessel's speed, said the IMB, part of the International Chamber of Commerce's Commercial Crime Services unit. 'The pirates aborted the attempt after 30 minutes and fled,' the bureau said.

The attack was one of four on ships worldwide reported during the week ending Aug 9, down from nine the week before, according to the IMB. The Strait of Malacca was the second-most dangerous area for pirate attacks worldwide, after Indonesia, with 20 reported incidents during the first half of the year, according to the bureau.

Most of last week's attacks happened in Asian waters. The same day, pirates targeted a second tanker off the west coast of India. Five attackers boarded the chemical tanker at an oil jetty at the port of Kandla at 1 am local time, the IMB said. They jumped overboard and escaped empty-handed after the vessel's crew raised an alarm, the centre said. Three tankers came under attack from pirates the week before.

On Friday, pirates stole property from a bulk carrier, a vessel used to haul commodities such as coal and iron ore, which had docked at Bangkok, Thailand. Two days later, robbers escaped after the crew of another bulk carrier raised an alarm off Venezuela.

Pirate attacks worldwide fell 22 per cent to 182 during the first six months of the year. Crew deaths doubled to 30, of which Nigeria accounted for half. - Bloomberg

Oh, I would love to have seen those pesky pirates saturated by a high pressure firehose.

"Take that, you dirty pirate!"

It's not well known, but there are rumors of piracies of private yachts in the Gulf of Mexico. Supposedly by drug smugglers who abandon the boats on isolated coastlines

Piracy including murder of the crew, then using the boat for a one-time run.

My brother is a yacht capt in the Gulf of Mex. He takes his boss and clients fishing and drinking all over, from the Keys to Cancun to Galveston. He has a full auto M-16 and plenty of ammo. Why can't a merchant ship have the same? At least a couple of AK's or something. Is there a law, or just politically correct?

More like laser guided mini-missles the blackhawks carry.

"You bother big boat, you disappear, that's all, end of story".

I think it is mostly the law of the country the ship is registered to, however, the liberals have been working hard at making it difficult for ordinary people to be armed for more than 50 years, so in many countries, it is almost impossible to own an effective weapon legally.

This story is for those who say UN and international laws have no teeth:

NEARLY 9% OF BELIZE FLEET BANNED FROM SAILING
Tuesday, 10 August 2004

BELIZE has issued orders stopping nearly 9% of its fleet from leaving port because they have not complied with the International Ship and Port Facility Security Code. The International Merchant Marine Registry of Belize (IMMARBE) says it has prohibited 24 vessels from sailing as they are non-compliant. In a statement IMMARBE says: “Belize has informed all the MOU’s, the US Coastguard and Port State Control accordingly. The 24 vessels represent 8.75% of the Belize registered fleet. “ The statement adds that 215 vessels registered with Belize do comply with the ISPS Code and have been issued with ISSC’s. This represents 78.46% of the total fleet. A further 35 vessels (12.79%) have submitted Security Plans for approval and will be issued with ISSC’s after verification audits have been carried out. IMMARBE says that it expect the certificates to be issued shortly.
