New Jersey Governor Resigns, Saying 'I Am A Gay American'
MTV via Google News ^

New Jersey Governor James McGreevey resigned from office Thursday, stating, "I am a gay American."

McGreevey spoke at a press conference in Trenton, New Jersey, Thursday afternoon (August 12), following allegations of corruption made by several of his political aides. The governor, who had served two years of his term, cited a "consensual affair with another man."

With his wife standing by his side, McGreevey announced his homosexuality. "From my early days in school until the present day," he said, "I noticed something that separated me from others."

"I have grappled with my own identity," McGreevey continued, describing how he struggled to align himself with what he felt were values that would make him part of a "traditional community."

"My truth is," he said, "that I am a gay American."

The governor then acknowledged his extramarital affair: "It was wrong, it was foolish, it was unacceptable," he said. "Let me be clear," the governor continued, "I accept total and full responsibility for my actions. However, I am required to do now, to do what is right, to correct the consequences of my actions and to be truthful to my loved ones, my friends and my family, and also, to myself."

Following the announcements of his homosexuality and extramarital affair, the governor explained that he felt the appropriate course of action was resignation.

"I am very proud of the things we have accomplished during this administration," McGreevey concluded, "and I want to thank humbly the citizens of the state of New Jersey for the privilege ... to govern."

McGreevey, who was elected the 51st governor of New Jersey on November 6, 2001, will leave office on November 15. His term would have run until January 17, 2006.

Under the state constitution, his successor will be Richard Codey, the current president of the state senate.

Arianna has always been off the chart, before and after the divorce. No changes there.

Unfortunately, Mc Greevey waited until the US Atty's office was looking at him for reasons (probably) unrelated to his sexual preferences. It's my guess this MAY have been the real reason for his resignation.

As far as his proclivities, had he come out of the closet at the beginning of his term,he would have (as GulliverSwift suggests) earned widespread Media adulation-especially in some of the newspapers that hunted his scalp.

Seinfeld never should have said that, but what do you expect from the world of secular entertainment. This kind of perversion and sin should not be made light of, or tolerated, even jokingly.

The gay community should think twice before they make this guy their posterboy. Hr didn't resign because he's gay.

He should have confessed and said, " I am a liberal Democrat. I'll screw anything that moves: men, women, taxpayers, a shrub on the off chance there's a snake in it. You name it. I'm there."

I listened to this on Hannity. What a dishonest blighter, he doesn't admit he gave a job to his lover that his lover was eminently unqualified for. He's trying to obscure his corruption by stepping out of the closet.

Regards, Ivan

"My truth is," he said, "that I am a gay American."

I'm stunned... is he is really an American?

I lierally laughed out loud when I heard this quote on the radio. It was like he was proclaiming himself as part of some ethnic group, rather than describing his sexual preferences. I wondered if the transcript would be hypenated... a Gay-American. It was certainly said that way.

He's trying to obscure his corruption by stepping out of the closet.

that's what it seems like - "gay" is a code-word here for "a class of victims". He is basically telling me, "hey I'm a victim - and hopefully you are too busy digesting that fact to notice all the dishonest & cowardly acts I committed which have basically forced me to come clean about this."

If he was a homo, why did he get married to a woman? That's where I have a big problem with this.
