U.S. to Give Border Patrol New Powers to Deport Illegal Aliens By

Filed at 3:37 p.m. ET

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Department of Homeland Security said Tuesday it will speed up deportations of certain illegal immigrants from countries other than Mexico to improve U.S. border security.

"This announcement today ... is a border security effort," Undersecretary Asa Hutchinson told reporters. "Those who choose to break our nation's immigration laws will be promptly removed from the United States."

In the past 16 months, U.S. officials along the Southwest border caught 42,000 illegal immigrants from countries other than Mexico. In the past, these would have been sent to an immigration court where cases take an average of one year to be processed. Now, these immigrants will be immediately returned to their home nation.

Mexicans are already sent back immediately, and the faster deportations already have been in use at seaports, airports and land immigration checkpoints in the United States since 1997. Hutchinson said the change would expand their use to those apprehended along the U.S. border.

Hutchinson said the change seeks to increase security at land borders. He said terrorists may try to enter the country along the vast land borders as security has been stepped up at other points of entry.

In a second change, Hutchinson said Mexicans with a special border crossing card will be allowed to make temporary visits along the Southwest border for up 30 days, up from the current limit of three days.

"It's designed for tourism, business and travel," he said of the increased time limits. "We want to send a clear message that those individuals who follow legal immigration procedures will benefit."

About 425,000 Mexicans who have the border crossing cards could benefit from the time extension, Hutchinson said.

"Deporting to Mexico is much easier. You just put them on a BP bus back to Mexico."
Turning the border zone into civilian free fire marksmanship training area (Border Patrol participation welcome) would be both cheaper and much more efficient. Within 3 weeks the problem would solve itself.

"This is only one step .... we need to seal the borders then find EVERY illegal alien and get them out of here!!!!!"

No. Just get a two-mile long train of locked boxcars full of them and leave it on the tracks outside Barstow, CA for a day. Then take it to Mexico the next day.

LOL. Sent back 3 days. What a joke. They caught a truck load in Ft. Worth. They are still here.

This is good, so I don't want to hear complaints against this positive move along the lines of "about time" or "too late now" or "horse is out of the barn", etc.

An idea worth further examination.

We can't build a wall. Even if we increased the numbers across the border it still wouldn't be enough to cover every perimeter.

We could also rotate more of our military to the border for training exercises. They'd serve as deterrant without it being in official capacity.

Hey Assa, how about deporting the Mexicans too?!

What makes them any better than the OTMs?

When they start fining employers $5000 for hiring illegals then we will know they're getting serious.

You are correct, it is a slap to the BP. this new plan has a lot of holes in it for illegals to still stay here..
Immigration legislation passed in 1996 allows the immigration service to deport certain groups of illegal aliens without judicial oversight, but until now the agency only permitted officials at the nation's airports and seaports to do so. The new rule will apply to illegal aliens caught within 100 miles of the Mexican and Canadian borders who have spent 14 days or less within the United States
All a person has to attest to is being here over 14 days, be hard to prove other wise.. and here they are in the land of "milk and honey" and my back yard...

Actually, I think it's John and Ken on the west coast who have literally stomped Asa into submission on this. He embarassed himself something fierce on their show, and they are running a very effective 'human sacrifice' effort to raise the visibility of this issue. Local congresscritters are running scared.

Some of this move by Asa is smoke and mirrors though. He still won't allow inland sweeps in areas where illegals are known to frequent. One such sweet netted 450 illegals in just a few days.

Police agencies across the nation opt out at will. Los Angeles is a prime example. The feds 'still' don't take illegal immigration serious.

Yeah, I caught that too. Would somebody please give me a logical reason why Mexicans get special license to break our laws? If nationals of any country deserve special license, it should be Brits, Poles, Italians, Japanese or any other country who is supporting the war on terrorism with money, material or manpower, not one which has reconquistadora ideas.

I agree, but make it DEEP in Mexico, not at the border. Flights to Cancun are pretty cheap.

This press release is just smokescreen to NOT enforce immigration. This administration does not want to enforce the laws because they are afraid of the immigrant activists because we don’t complain as loud. This action was in response to the boarder portal sweeps which have now stopped in the interior of CA and under the new official structure will not continue, note another article states that unless they are caught in transient they are home free, this sucks for the tax payers who will have to pay for this socialist welfare program of those who make it to the interior:

"The new rule will apply to illegal aliens caught within 100 miles of the Mexican and Canadian borders who have spent 14 days or less within the United States. "

Sure hope they do this but I don't believe them. It's a logistics problem that the Border Patrol is too discombobulated to solve.

Most likely, these new flights will be run by the U.S. Marshalls, since they run the current flights.

The latest high volume invaders via Mexico are Brazilians.

Brazil has always been in the top 5.
