The title refers to a daily report given to the president of the United States detailing the most serious terrorist threats against the country. To tackle those threats, the government has formed a top-notch task force to infiltrate the terror cells and cut off the danger.

I'm not superstitious, but I am cautious on that day. Medical statistics show that there are more accidents on that day than on other days.

I found an interesting article that is unrelated, but it's encouraging because it sounds like the U.N. oil for food scandal may be getting some legs.

Toward the end of 2000, when Saddam Hussein's skimming from the oil-for-food program for Iraq kicked into high gear, reports spread quickly to the program's supervisors at the United Nations.

Oil industry experts told Security Council members and Secretary General Kofi Annan's staff that Iraq was demanding under-the-table payoffs from its oil buyers. The British mission distributed a background paper to Council members outlining what it called "the systematic abuse of the program" and described how Iraq was shaking down its oil customers and suppliers of goods for kickbacks.

When the report landed in the United Nations' Iraq sanctions committee, the clearinghouse for all contracts with Iraq, it caused only a few ripples of consternation. There was no action, diplomats said, not even a formal meeting on the allegations. (snip)

I have always had good results with Federal HydraShok cartridges, for over a decade, in terms of feeding. They will flow through my Sig .380, my friend's Colt, any 9mm, and have never jammed over a history of less than fifty rounds in my mil-spec 1911. The shape is similar to FMJ rounds (ball), and factory ramps seem to accept them.

Thanks for your encouragement. This is a premonitions that smacked me in the face today, and I can't shake it because of the recent assassination threats. After seeing Portland on the map, it looks like a tricky place to secure because of it's proximity to the border and Vancouver specifically. The fact that the president's father coined the name "Little Beirut" really jumped out at me too.

The U.S. government, which has held Yaser Esam Hamdi incommunicado in a Navy brig for two years without charges, much of the time without a lawyer, indicated yesterday that it is nearing a deal that would free him altogether.

The government is negotiating with Hamdi's lawyers about "terms and conditions acceptable to both parties that would allow Mr. Hamdi to be released from . . . custody," according to documents filed in federal court in Norfolk. The legal papers, submitted jointly by federal prosecutors and Hamdi's attorneys, asked the court to stay all proceedings for 21 days while negotiations continue. (snip)

Nuke breakdown played down

THE Ukrainian authorities today sought to play down a series of incidents which disabled a brand new nuclear reactor, saying there was no cause for concern and accusing the media of being alarmist.

The reactor at Khmelnitsky power station had to be shut down on Sunday, less than two hours after it went into operation, Interfax news agency reported on yesterday.

Further technical failures prevented it operating on Monday and Tuesday.

"These incidents do not represent any threat to the public or to the environment," state nuclear energy company Energoatom said in a statement.

Ukraine was the scene of the world's worst civilian nuclear disaster in 1986, when a reactor at Chernobyl nuclear power station exploded, contaminating large areas in Ukraine and neighbouring Belarus and Russia. (snip)

Crude prices breach $45 level

Friday, August 13, 2004 (New York):

Crude oil prices jumped well above $45 a barrel on Thursday, continuing to rally on uncertainties in oil-producing nations at a time when demand is strong and the world's excess output capacity is thin.

The price of light, sweet crude for September delivery surged 70 cents to $45.50 on the New York Mercantile Exchange - the highest settlement price on record.

Traders said on Thursday they were focused on potential supply troubles in Iraq, where the oil infrastructure has been threatened by the instability and in Russia, where oil giant Yukos faces a multi-billion dollar back-tax bill. (snip)

Radical cleric Sadr wounded

RADICAL Iraqi Shiite cleric Moqtada Sadr had been woundec, a spokesman for the cleric told AFP today.

"He was wounded in three places and his condition is not known yet," Sheikh Ahmed al-Shaibani said from inside the revered Imam Ali mausoleum.
