There's a picture of an editorial cartoon drawn by a aguy at the KC Star that shows
Arthur Bryant arriving at the Pearly Gates (after he died) and God saying
"Did you bring BBQ sauce?"

Count me amongst the folks who will say "Are you SURE this is Heaven, if I am allowed
entry only to be told 'we don't serve BBQ here...HE doesn't like messy fingers.'"!!!

Oh yeahhhhhhhhh.....Arthur Bryants!

Damned good BBQ at a good price. I practically wiped out a whole rack back in the spring of '98.

Love their BBQ sauce. Took some home with me.

You wouldn't BELIEVE how good the food is here. The cabrito is excellent!

Hmmm...BBQ'ed baby goat? (from what I find on Google)
I've not heard of it before...but I'll keep an open mind.
I don't think I've ever disliked anything BBQed.

My usual "hedge" when making a bet over a topic with a friend...
"If I'm wrong, I get to have plenty of BBQ sauce on that crow, right?".

I'm impressed you got Louie in there, great joint.

Ain't it funny how everybody has a different favorite when it comes to BBQ?

A couple more good ones in the central Texas area.

Cooper's in Llano.

Smitty's, Black's and Kreuz Market in Lockhart. (What can I say, I take a ride there I hit all three...).

In Austin Sam's and The Iron Works (the latter mostly cause it's the closest that's tolerable. Can't tolerate County Line, Artz or, gasp, Rudy's!).

In the same neighborhood Boyd's in Statesboro. Very, very different from the Texas BBQ I usually eat but I forced myself to eat about $20 worth.

When I was a kid, my parents always used to take me to Russel's, outside of Chicago. Messiest, tastiest, most marvelous barbecue sandwiches on soft cushy rolls, with extra sauce on the side and a token you could put into the 8-foot tall chef shaped vending machine to get a prize after dinner. Gosh, I'm craving that now.

In NC, this is my favorite:

Jimmy's Barbecue
1703 Cotton Grove Rd.
Lexington, NC 27292

Gary's in China Grove, NC is my second favorite.

In SC, my favorite is :
Mutt's BBQ
101 West Rd
Greer , SC 29650
also in Easley, Greenville, and Seneca SC- they're all good.

and for a different kind of BBQ completely (mustard sauce) I love:
Maurice's Barbeque (Piggy Park)
multiple locations in Columbia, SC

Best name for a BBQ joint:
Butts on the Creek, Maggie Valley, NC (west of Asheville)

I haven't made it out there but I hear it is very good. I believe the same family owns a place in Washington or East Peoria (Sunnyland) but I can't remember the name. It used to be a tavern. Good tortellini. I think they also sell it frozen in area supermarkets.

Avanti's really isn't a bad place either if you want cheap but well prepared food.

Actually there's a guy who just wrote a book re: the best (NC) BBQ's. Of course a chain cant compete with pit cook / hickory wood but he did give a good review to Smithfield's. I've eaten there its great for a chain but when you have Wilburs and Stameys going back to the 1930s ...

All this talk - and we're off to Danny's BBQ....

Harold's in Atlanta. hand cut, served on toast handmade over coals from the pit!

Good to see Harold's is still going. Have eaten many a sammitch at the counter watching them chop that pig and toast that bread.

I'll throw in two local (Upper East Tennessee)

1. Dixie Barbeque on North Roan in Johnson City. Andy Griffith reruns and beach music and all kinds of college football memorabilia. Alan Howell is a sailing man, and he brought back a chicken sandwich (Anagoda?) from some island in the Caribbean

2. Ridgewood, out in the country, between Bluff City and Elizabethton. Get there early, because at 9:00, they lock the doors and no more BBQ.

Yes, we do. Sweatman's, in Holly Hill, South Carolina, beats any I had in North Carolina. They have the best ribs

If its ribs it ain't BBQ.

Harold's has pretty good stew too.
The ONLY place I know of
with "Cracklins" in the corn bread.

I'm trying to move to Dayton/Spring city north of
Chattanooga, any good places around there?

I haven't been to Carson's in probably ten or twelve years but I do remember how much I enjoyed the food there. You might not have the barbecue other regions have, but Chicago has a lot of treats not available in other places!

Here in Houston, I can't just walk around the corner and get a good Italian beef sandwich or a polish. I can't find a good Chicago style pizza either. While that might be good for my heart, my soul misses that wonderful food!

The good thing about traveling is getting a regional "take" on different food. The bad thing about it is that you can't take all that good food home with you!

I am convinced that once you head North or East of Texas, you aren't going to be able to find out-of-this-world Tex Mex food. This place has spoiled me for Mexican food. I guess I'll have to stay here. :)

Now you did it!

I'll have to wait in line twice as long when I visit there in two weeks.

If anyone goes to "Sticky Fingers", be sure to buy some of their little jars of seasoning. Pretty durn good.

That said, I've have had barbeque all over this country. IMHO nothing beats Texas! I guess it's all a matter of taste.

Ok HC - I need better directions than that......lol....... can ya give me a road for "north of Richmond"?

The Swinging Door is easiest to reach on the east end of Richmond Texas about 3 miles north of Hwy 90A on FM 359. It's pretty good BBQ, but the atmosphere is great.. They are great folks out there.

However, LOLOL, the best BBQ is at the west side of Rosenberg on 90A at a stand with a simple BBQ sign. The old black guy is really.. DA Man.. Take it from a real man from the south.. That's moi, from the south side of Chicago.. :)
