Illinois Voters Say No Thanks To Keyes
CBS 2 Chicago ^ | August 6, 2004 | Mike Flannery

CHICAGO (CBS 2) Alan Keyes is expected to formally enter the race for U.S. Senate this Sunday, but an exclusive CBS 2 poll shows most Illinoisans think it’s inappropriate for Keyes to run in Illinois. Many have an unfavorable view of the Maryland resident.

Our exclusive CBS 2/Newsradio 780 poll suggests that Keyes has a lot of hard work ahead in the senate contest.

Some Republican leaders are preparing to welcome Alan Keyes to Illinois this Sunday with a rally in northwest suburban Arlington Heights. Others are speaking out about the drawbacks of a candidate who's never lived in the Prairie State, no matter how good a debater he may be.

“Mr. Keyes, while he'll raise the level of debate, there's no doubt he'll be able to stand on the stage with Mr. Obama, it's not certain that he'll know where the stage is,” said Greg Baise, president of the Illinois Manufacturers Association.

It is not just Greg Baise and his powerful Illinois Manufacturers Association. When we asked 500 adults about a non-resident such as Keyes running to represent Illinois in the Senate, 25 percent said it was appropriate; 75 percent inappropriate.

Asked their view of Alan Keyes specifically, 18 percent said it was favorable; 33 percent said it was unfavorable; with 49 percent having no impression.

With Democratic Senate nominee Barack Obama still basking in the glow of the national attention he received at the Boston convention, 48 percent of Illinois adults said they had a favorable view of him, with 22 percent unfavorable and 29 percent reporting no impression either way.

Referring to our findings, a Keyes spokesman said, "It doesn't surprise us at all. Obama's been unopposed for six weeks now. Let's give (Keyes) a chance to talk to the voters of Illinois before taking another poll."

There are two other candidates also running for U.S. Senate in Illinois. Jerry Kohn is with the Libertarian Party. Albert Franzen is running as an independent candidate.

Keyes beat Dershowitz and that was a debate of ideas and facts.

Obama is a lightweight when it coems to that.

A picture of the new, "Three Stooges." Terayshu looks like a horror movie poster-child. Edwards looks like a fag who just took a hit from a crack pipe. Scarykerry is a definite, Goober look-a-like from the Andy Griffin show.

As I stated on another thread on this subject:

"All Free Republic lovers of liberty should be thrilled when an articulate person steeped in an understanding of America's Constitutional republic and the philosophy expressed in the Declaration of Independence gets a chance to be heard by hundreds of thousands of people.

"Let's not quibble about the win/lose question right now. Hadn't the election already been virtually conceded to Obama when Ryan dropped out? If so, let's just be glad that a controversial, outspoken advocate for liberty has a chance to be heard. Who knows, some future young leader may be influenced by the reasoned arguments Keyes will use to rebut the Liberal Left politics of the Democrats.

"Every voice for the Founders' philosophy is needed right now. Keyes, by education and by talent and devotion to the Constitution, needs to be heard. Let him have the pulpit! Give him the vote. Fresh air and sunshine are needed--and the young rising star of the Liberal Left may learn some new debating skills, and a thing or two about America's founding philosophy too."

Alan Keyes is a 21st Century man who holds deeply to the philosophy of Washington, the Adamses, Madison, Jefferson, and all the other geniuses who made the 'miracle of America' come into being. Not only does his Harvard education in constitutional government qualify him for expounding on that philosophy, but he has a Creator-endowed intellect and ability to articulate principles that few others possess. More power to the Illinois GOP for its courage in putting him opposite Obama in the debate arena!!

you mean pro choice obe, who came to pro life beliefs when he was running in the primaries.

If your name was ryan in the past twenty years you could be in the pubbie party, in illinois.

Keyes is like Patrick Fitzgerald (the us attorney that is going after illinois politicos), you need an outsider to shake up the illinois political establishment.

If the ploitician is from illinois he has larceny in his heart, whether the name is ryan, daley, durbin, madigian, or osama obama.

I like Keyes for the most part, but am I the only one who thinks he uses more words to express himself than he needs?

Sadly, Illinois will not be electing a Republican to a statewide office anytime soon. Boss Daley will see that enough votes are pulled from Chicago's "special districts" to make sure the Rat wins.

I don't know how many times Keyes has run for office, but I don't think he's won any election. Don't get me wrong, I'd far rather see Keyes win this race than Obama. But I'm not even going to begin to raise my hopes before I see evidence that he's ahead in the polls.

Keyes appeals to social conservatives and has a knack for making all other conservatives and swing voters extremely nervous. The thought of getting crossover Democrats is kind of silly.

[Libertarian] Jerry Kohn is also pro-life

Very interesting.

http://www.kohn2004.org/abortion.shtml

I am pro-life. While many in the Libertarian Party are pro-choice, on this issue, I will have to disagree with those members. The Libertarian Party believes in the principle of non-aggression - that no individual shall use force or violence against another except in self-defense. While the power of the state should be strictly limited when it comes to matters of personal liberty, I believe the state has a duty to protect innocent life from aggression even if that life is still developing in its mother's womb.

Since the Roe v. Wade decision in 1973, however, this area of public policy has largely been removed from the legislative arena and put into the federal courts. I believe the Roe v. Wade case was wrongly decided - that the Supreme Court overreached its authority. Our Constitution is silent on the issue of abortion, and properly, this issue should be decided by our state legislatures as it was prior to Roe.

What's the margin of error for an unbiased sample of 500? 6%? 10%? Anyone want to do the math?

If they're trotting out a cooked poll already, Obama's worried.

That's funny. With all the number the CBS affiliate is throwing around, there was no mention of what percentage would vote for Mr. Keyes or Mr. Obama. The liberal media in Illinois does not like the notion that the coronation of a socialist with a name like Obama is being delayed.
