Keyes' supporters rallied in front of the Union League Club Wednesday afternoon to meet Alan Keyes as he arrived for an interview with the IL GOP. |
ARLINGTON HEIGHTS -- Republicans from all over the state are expected to converge in Arlington Heights this Sunday to see Ambassador Alan Keyes accept the State Central Committee's tap as their U.S. Senate candidate for the 2004 campaign.
A skeleton campaign staff is being put together now, and arrangement for Keyes to step into the wild world of Illinois politics is in motion.
"Supporters of Ambassador Keyes are encouraged to come to a rally Sunday afternoon at 2:00 PM at the Wellington Restaurant, 2121 South Arlington Heights Road in the northwestern suburb of Arlington Heights," the campaign said on Friday.
While the Chicago media has been speculating that Keyes will not accept the offer to challenge Democratic candidate Barack Obama for the U.S. Senate slot, IL GOP state central committeemen have been saying since Wednesday that Keyes is indeed coming, he only needed a few days to get his campaign staff lined up and get personal details in place before formally accepting the bid.
Editorials condemning the Republican party's choice of Keyes were prominent in Chicago papers on Friday, but Keyes supporters throughout the state say they are planning to welcome their candidate Sunday afternoon, the campaign said today.
One paper ridiculed the number of Keyes supporters that met him at the Union League Club on Wednesday, suggesting that few people support a Keyes' candidacy. Barack Obama has been met by crowds numbering in the hundreds since his national exposure at the Democratic National Convention last week.
But all that doesn't seem to faze those who encouraged Keyes to come to Illinois and run for U.S. Senate.
"The Republican base is energized with this candidacy," State Senator Dave Syverson, the member of the state central committee with the most weighted vote, said this week. "There's less than 90 days until the election. We're counting on the base now."
WHAT: Welcoming Rally for Ambassador Alan Keyes

Godspeed Alan!
Judy Collins - Now, There's a voice!
Please nobody tell me she's a whacked out liberal.
But it took the infamous George Ryan to raise the price of those plates from $45 to $78
Yes, the Sinatra version is good also. I'd rate Streisand's as an "also ran". Frankly, I didn't know she'd done that song, although it's not surprising.
The $78 was just the the road tax.
If you wanted new plates you had to shell out an additional $22.
She probably is, but she still has a great voice.
I did a google search on her plus I got a Freep mail and both agree - She's a hopeless lib. I never cared for Streisand - politics or singing.
Don't ever peek like that again. You just enjoy the music that you enjoy and don't worry about what crazy thoughts might be lurking in an entertainer's head.
LOL. Maybe the flip side of "Shut up and sing" is "Shut up and listen." ;-)
The Keyes campaign has pledged support for George W. Bush, and we're all wishing him the best"

Luis, heres a news flash for you. The Illinois Republican Party has OFFICIALLY picked Keyes as their candidate. THERE ARE NO OTHER REPUBLICANS LEFT IN THE RACE. The Senate is currently divided 51-49. You either support Keyes or you support Obama. If you want to cast your lot with the crack-smoking socialist from Hawaii, please stop posting on FR and instead visit www.obamaforillinois.com , Im sure hell be happy to have your crossover support to knock off another Republican seat in the Senate.
If youre going to continue giving ammo to Obama though, please stop lying about yourself and claiming to be a broken glass Republican. No sane Republican wants to give the Chicago DEMOCRAT machine any MORE control over Illinois.
The most amazing thing about you anti-Keyes people is way you refuse to accept the candidate because he was choosen by the party committee after the original candidate dropped out, though all you moderates had NO problem when the California RINO Party officially got behind the Austrian liberal when there were STILL other Republicans on the ballot. Who picked Arnold in the PRIMARY? No one! I guess its OKAY for the RINO Party of California to dictate who every Republican should vote for, but the Illinois Republican Party isnt ALLOWED to find a replacement candidate if the original candidate DROPS OUT, eh?
Its also pretty laughable that you question Keyes credentials because he has critized the President from time to time and doesnt agree with him on 100% of the adminstrations agenda. Keyes endorsed Bush in 2000 and has had many favorable things to say about aspects of the Bush adminstration over the years. The Bush adminstration wont give Keyes the time of day and didnt even let him have a speaking spot in 2000, though RINO McCain got one. I would hope they reconsider, but I will vote for Bush regardless.
Besides, in YOUR state, youre backing the Johnny-come-lately RINO who whole-heartily campaigned and donated to Dukakis in 1988, so we know how much value you put behind whether a candidate has always been loyal to the GOP. Now, as you know, I dont like your RINO candidate in Florida one bit, but IF the party nominates him, I will hold my nose and support him like any sane Republican would do. Doing otherwise is called cutting off ones nose to spit in their face.
Finally, we Illinoisans dont need non-Illinoisans to lecture us on Keyes being a carpetbagger. You see, Keyes primary vote in OUR state was one of the HIGHEST in the nation, and he actually won MORE votes in Illinois than four of the also-rans in Illinois from this years Senate primary. A guy who actually won primaries, as held political office, and received over 66,000 votes from Illinoisans has more of a mandate to represent our values than a guy who lost primaries, never held political office, received 19,000 votes, and happens to live here.
One again, its Keyes or Obama. Pick one. If you cast your lot with a candidate who ran to the LEFT of Black Panther Bobby Rush, its your choice. The DNC will be happy to send you a membership card soon.

If that's true, we can only admire him more.
Luis, the GOP wants Keyes to run. The President wants Keyes to run. Jim Robinson wants Keyes to run.
So, if you're trying to say Keyes is disloyal, you better take a look in the mirror.
Keyes is one of the very best orators in the US today.
I think he'll rough Obama up some, but I don't think illinois voters will accept him as a senator.
Have you been going all over the Internet trying to find quotes that make Dr Keyes look bad?
What are you doing to yourself, Luis? You used to be a well-respected name, around here. If you don't like Dr Keyes, okay, you've made your point a hundred. Now stop stalking his supporters' threads and go do something useful. Cheers, Byron
"I am a conservative. I'm part of that group of conservatives in the party who is not altogether happy with G. W. Bush. I see lots of reasons to find fault with steps that he has taken in various areas, but I'll tell you one thing: I think it's time that everybody in this country understand that when we are faced with a threat to our very survival, we put aside other things and we focus on the fact that we have at the helm somebody who is--even if, let us say for a minute that Iraq was a mistake, as some people are trying to argue. I'd rather have a president who errs on the side of defending this country, and going after our enemies, than somebody like John Kerry who wants to sit on his butt and does nothing while Americans die. And I think that's the key issue here." -- Alan KeyesAnd:http://renewamerica.us/archives/media/interviews/04_03_30hannity.htm
COLMES: Can you tell me what George W. Bush has done that's good for the African American community?KEYES: I think the most important thing that G. W. Bush has done is what he's done that's good for America: he has stood against this country's enemies. I don't remember on September the 12th that we counted the bodies in terms of who was black and who was white. Thank God that day we remembered that we were all of us Americans--and G. W. Bush has been a president standing against that evil for the sake of all Americans, and that's what I think people will appreciate.

Maybe, maybe not. Just taking the shine off Obama is an important objective.
The bottom line is, you have to get out on the playing field and have a go, if you want to accomplish anything. I think if Dr Keyes is prepared to go into a lion's den like Illinois, the least FR can do is support him. So, how about it?
Thanks. I'm no expert, on liberal music.
Can you post an after-action report, Laura? Maybe even, pics? There's a stack of Freepers who'd really appreciate it. Hope you don't mind me asking, all the best, Byron
Samuel Johnson said that a second marriage is the triumph of hope over experience.
So is a Keyes candidacy in Illinois.
His Y2K campaign staff put together an inept campaign, which is an indication that he is a poor administrator.
Connie Hair was his communications director.
