Keyes to Announce Candidacy at Sunday Rally (Arlington Heights, Illinois)

Keyes' supporters rallied in front of the Union League Club Wednesday afternoon to meet Alan Keyes as he arrived for an interview with the IL GOP.

UPDATE -- IllinoisLeader.com has just confirmed that Alan Keyes will appear in person to announce his candidacy Sunday at the 2:00 p.m. rally for his supporters to be held at the Wellington Restaurant in Arlington Heights.

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS -- Republicans from all over the state are expected to converge in Arlington Heights this Sunday to see Ambassador Alan Keyes accept the State Central Committee's tap as their U.S. Senate candidate for the 2004 campaign.

A skeleton campaign staff is being put together now, and arrangement for Keyes to step into the wild world of Illinois politics is in motion.

"Supporters of Ambassador Keyes are encouraged to come to a rally Sunday afternoon at 2:00 PM at the Wellington Restaurant, 2121 South Arlington Heights Road in the northwestern suburb of Arlington Heights," the campaign said on Friday.

While the Chicago media has been speculating that Keyes will not accept the offer to challenge Democratic candidate Barack Obama for the U.S. Senate slot, IL GOP state central committeemen have been saying since Wednesday that Keyes is indeed coming, he only needed a few days to get his campaign staff lined up and get personal details in place before formally accepting the bid.

Editorials condemning the Republican party's choice of Keyes were prominent in Chicago papers on Friday, but Keyes supporters throughout the state say they are planning to welcome their candidate Sunday afternoon, the campaign said today.

One paper ridiculed the number of Keyes supporters that met him at the Union League Club on Wednesday, suggesting that few people support a Keyes' candidacy. Barack Obama has been met by crowds numbering in the hundreds since his national exposure at the Democratic National Convention last week.

But all that doesn't seem to faze those who encouraged Keyes to come to Illinois and run for U.S. Senate.

"The Republican base is energized with this candidacy," State Senator Dave Syverson, the member of the state central committee with the most weighted vote, said this week. "There's less than 90 days until the election. We're counting on the base now."

"Implicit in your admission that you took Keyes' quote out of context, is an admission that Keyes support for the war is not what you purport it to be."

That's assuming, and there's an old saying about that. There ius still a debate elsewhere in FR over the veracity of this article, and thus far, no one has proven that the newspaper distorted Keyes' views.

"What Keyes said about Hillary is not relevant in this race."

Really?

Two days ago, I couldn't find one single item on Google confirming Keyes' statemt about Hillary, today, the quote returned 271 hits.

It may not mean anything to you, but it's going to mean a whole lot to the voters in Illinois.

As a matter of fact, it already means something to a number of FReepers...from Illinois.

He did, however, explain the importance of the United Nations as an institution created to foster peace. He faulted President George W. Bush for taking the U.N. route in the first place by renewing the weapons inspection mandate last fall. He added that while it would be lawful according to U.N. resolutions for the United States to defend itself if it recognized a threat, it was wrong for the United States to attack on the basis that Iraq was not following U.N. resolutions. Keyes argued that a preemptive strike is not necessarily wrong, "so long as it is in the context of a defensive war."

This passage (one of the few quotes in this student newspaper), along with the quotes posted on this thread and duly ignored by you, suggest that Keyes agrees with the war but does not agree with the stated justification for it.

Completely different than your original assertion that, "Obviously, in Alan Keyes mid, Bush made a mistake (erred) by going into Iraq."

Obama has called the war a polical hack job distracting from the war on poverty. That's basically what he said in '02. He has backed off that, but he probably still believes it.

YOu're back on that?

Go back and visit my previous post.

But let's get back to Keyes' hypocrisy in running for a Senate seat in Illinois after criticizing Hillary for doing it in New York, shall we?

Back on what? You tell me you didn't make a mistake in the substance of that post. In other words, you stand by those words. What - can't keep track of your own disinformation? LOL.

I couldn't care less about his statements regarding Hillary. He's either changed him mind since or was guilty of a bit of hyperbole at the time. It has absolutely no impact on the IL GOP inviting Keyes to run, and him accepting the nomination.

You certainly seem to enjoy smearing Keyes by any means necessary, Luis...

Let's see, you care about my apparent misrepresentation of a Keyes quote, but could care less about the outright hypocrisy of his political move in running for office in Illinois.

I would say that the true hypocrite here is you.

You both made a mistake. I was willing to look past yours, until you refused to admit that you made it.

I'll take the clipart as an admission on your part that you've been soundly beaten on the substantive issues of this thread. Thanks.

Wrong yet again, I admitted that I did not read the entire quote before commenting on it, so my conclusion on that quote were wrong; the clipart addresses your absolute refusal to discuss anything other than an issue that's already been resolved by everyone else, including the original poster.

You remind me a whole lot of Larry Klayman and Judicial Watch, who called anything that wasn't a resounding defeat, a "victory".

Come to think of it, this reminds me of Larry jumping into the Elian mess two days before he was to be deported, and asking for donations to "save Elian". Let's bet that Keyes' speaking fees go up after this.

Okay. I misunderstood your earlier post, then. I thought you were sticking by your original conclusion. My mistake.

LOL - probably. But seeing as how Keyes is a good spokesman for conservatism, that's just fine by me.

I think Obama's man just want to see his own words posted, get some kind of response. Such passion. Or maybe he hates Keyes. In any case, he hasn't been able to post anything of relevance against Keyes. In any debate Keyes will make mincemeat out of Obama whose talk was largely fluff.

Argue with the dictionary bud.

I cited the dictionary, in #70.

Idiom: err on the side of something

To run the risk of (a particular fault) in order to avoid an opposite and greater fault.

Example: Err on the side of caution

But go ahead, tell us yet again how YOU are right and the entire community of native speakers is wrong.

In future run for president (probably against Hillary), I'll support him then too.

In what universe will that happen?

By the way, and in case you had any doubts in your mind, I AM telling you what our language means, I do it because I am well-suited for the task, and able to do so with ease and incisiveness.

So you've just incisively ordered all of us to take our idioms literally.

Next up, someone will say he went down swinging and you'll call him a liar because he wasn't at a baseball game. Because you ARE telling us what our language means, and when Luis Gonzales issues an order, we'd better humbly bow and be grateful for such a kind happenstance that such a linguistic luminary learned our backward language in order to set about correcting it.

The troll is just pulling our leg, trying to get responses to his posts.

Keyes comments regarding Hillary are just trivia, not applicable to this race, something to be used against him when there is nothing else.

By the way, you consulted a thesaurus, not a dictionary...but don't let the "English as a second language" kid correct you on the use of OUR language.

What gives with L.G.? Is he a Rockefeller Republican - a RINO - or an out-and-out Democrat? Seems pretty clear he wants the Dems to win the Illinois senate seat. Is he on Daschle's Christmas card list? He should be.
