Stop with the Hillary/Keyes comparisons already (like in the linked oped in the newspaper, the Pantagraph). Hillary was on a POWER TRIP -- she pushed local candidates (Lowy and Andrew Cuomo) to the side so she could have the prize for herself. IN CONTRAST, AMBASSADOR KEYES IS RESPONDING TO A CALL FOR HELP FROM AN IMPERILED ILLINOIS REPUBLICAN PARTY. He's on a rescue mission. True, the media in Illinois don't like his decision, they don't want him showing up with a life-preserver - - - but why should he agree with them that the local GOP should be allowed to drown? CONGRATULATIONS, AMBASSADOR KEYES. YOU'VE SHOWN A SENSE OF DUTY BY RESPONDING TO A CALL FOR HELP.
If I was an Illinois voter I'd vote for Keyes. Then I'd resign my membership in the state GOP and move to Wisconsin.

In november you'll have a liberal and a conservative on the ballot. Their current street address is almost irrelevent to how they decide their votes. It says little about how well they will represent *you* ... Obama could be my next door neighor and he would represent me WORSE than the PM of Itay!

So, to ignore these substantive real issues - the chasm between the liberal vision of Obama and the Conservative vision of Keyes - and focus on this quibble is misplaced priorities.

Gee two replies to the same post just to tell me you don't want to talk to me. This isn't character assassination, just expressing my disappointment that so many FReepers would ignore the principles of our government as clearly expressed in the Constitution just because they've got so much wood for Keyes. I dig Keyes too, but I wouldn't vote for him to replace McCain (or even a box of rocks for that matter) until he actually lived in Arizona for at least a year. It's sad to watch the obviously spelled out principle of the Founding Fathers discarded, and sadder still to see the discarded in an attempt to get a Consitutional scholar like Keyes, who should know better, into a position of power he doesn't deserve.
If you want to consider my sadness character assassination that's your perogative, but it's not.
You might be correct that Illionois is too far gone. In fact, our country may be too far gone. And I don't like the circumstances by which Keyes is coming into this thing. But I'm behind him a %1000.
There's no red herring about it. That is what Keyes is if he goes through with this.

How can someone not from the state represent the state? They can't, that's why the founders put that clause in the Constitution. Unfortunately they made the residency necessary at time of election, but anybody that understands why that clause is there understands why people that move in just to get elected shouldn't be.
Keyes not being a resident of the state IS a substantive and real issue. No one belongs in office as an elected representative of a state they've never lived in, ignoring this just to elect somebody is the saddest form of political idolatry and everyone that thinks it's a good idea should be ashamed of themselves. And anyone that criticized Hillary for carpetbagging and now wants Keyes in is the most pathetic kind of hypocrite.
I understand your concerns, but at this point I think the wisest move is to get fully behind Keyes.
The best move for Keyes would have been for him to have moved to a conservative or at least a "toss-up" state long ago, and ran for the nomination there, instead of staying in Maryland. He would have most certainly been a Senator by now.

Wrong. Ryan was chosen by the people in an open primary. Keyes was chosen by a few people in a loop office.

People who support Socialists over 'carpetbaggers' should be ashamed of themselves. The original 'carpetbaggers' were benign people who were being maligned by racists. Occasionally such people are needed.
Based on how Keyes would vote in the Senate he certainly deserves your vote. Based on what the two REALISTIC choices are he certainly deserves your vote. Make your vote count against Obama.
I'm not supporting a socialist. Illinois should find a home grown conservative without sex scandals. Carpetbaggers weren't benign, they were scum seeking power in a vacuum, such people are never needed.
Fine. Hold a write-in campaign for Jack Ryan, the true "representative of the people."
As to the merits of the process, well, things are set up the way they are because that's the way it has to be. The party has to choose its best representative after the nominee backs out.
The IL GOP would never have been put in this position, were it not for Jack Ryan's betrayal. He knew beforehand his divorce records would be made public. Because this "representative of the people" didn't come clean early, he created a nightmare scenario for the party.
He forced the burden for choosing a replacement on the shoulders of the State Central Committee. They chose Keyes as the person who could best represent the party in this race. Ultimately, we'll see in November who the people feel best reflects their views. All of this is consistent with the principle of representative government. It's not ideal, but it's the way things are in crisis mode. And there is NOTHING inherently immoral about it.
