Pink Floyd's Wall Broadway bound
Harvey Weinstein will help bring the Wall to Broadway
Harvey Weinstein will help bring the Wall to Broadway Pink Floyd's seminal album The Wall is the latest piece of popular rock to be turned into a musical. Its storyline, portraying the fictional life of anti-hero Pink who withdraws into a fantasy world, will be staged on Broadway in New York.
The band's live performances of the album were among the most ambitious spectacles attempted in rock music.
Since its 1979 release, the album, which features hit track Another Brick in the Wall, has sold 23m copies.
A film company and former Sony Music boss Thomas Mottle have bought the rights to develop the musical from Roger Waters, who co-founded the band.
'Bombastic' movie
Waters, the band's bassist, will write and compose the orchestral arrangements for the New York stage production.
The Wall was turned into a semi-animated 1982 film, starring Bob Geldof as a pop star who descends into madness.
It was described as "a vacuous, bombastic and humourless piece of self-indulgence" at the time.
Waters retained the rights to The Wall after an acrimonious departure from the band in the 1980s.
He said: "Now I can write in some laughs, notable by their absence in the movie."
Marimba Films co-chairman Harvey Weinstein said: "I am thrilled to be involved with bringing The Wall to Broadway and to give new generations the opportunity to see this legendary show."
Screw the Left using Concert Halls and Arenas to propogate their false philosophies.
I always enjoyed Pink Floyd's music, but I recently heard that they're just another brick in the commie wall. They'll never get a dime from me.
This is going to flop. Big time.
Now we know the real reason why Roger Waters has been wailing in the news about tearing down the security "wall" in Israel: it's simply a publicity stunt to promote his new Broadway show.
The Left is always happy to profit off the suffering of others.
This must be Syd's coffe I've been drinking all day!
man I hate pink floyd.
now if they were making "rock and roll highschool" the broadway play, that i would go see!
Agreeing. Concert Halls and Stadiums are Dionysian events which too many use to fund their causes ( huge money)and mislead idealistic attendees. I would rather have the fess up and admit they are pacifists but no they cloak it in all this BS all the way to the bank.
it was worth it
Broadway seems to just be adapting old movies and tv shows for the stage or else recasting Broadway hits with movie and tv stars/has beens.
They took Charles Griffith's Little Shop of Horrors away from Roger Corman. I kept waiting for them to follow up with an all singing/all dancing version of Charles Griffith's Deathrace 2000.
Rock and Roll PING! email Weegee to get on/off this list (or grab it yourself to PING the rest)
not sure how much "false philophy" ther eis in The Wall. Most of it is about how public schools are a brain washing facility and the idol worship in our popular culture is unhealthy. Sounds like pretty good philosphy to me.
I'll stand up for the band.
Current politics aside, excellent music by both Waters and the original line up. Great headphone material.
Great stageshow - saw the WALL in LA.
Ok movie and was one of the first that I could follow and understand in cinematic terms. I saw it just when I had enough film experience to understand what was going on with the editing and cinematography.
I'd go see it on stage.
Yeah, I agree. David Gilmour is an excellent guitarist.
Roger Waters is a crybaby. I saw Floyd's Division Bell concert in '94 and it was great. The Wall, on the other hand...some of the songs on that album were ok but my favorite will always be DSofTM.
is this serious? please tell me it's not.
Sadly, a lot of Gilour's guitar parts for Floyd were sped up. I was a little deflated when I heard that.
