(CBS/AP) Two men were arrested in Albany, N.Y. early Thursday on suspicion of planning to buy shoulder-launched missiles, CBS News has learned.
Federal agents and city police picked up the men during an overnight raid on a mosque, with armed officers sealing off a block in downtown for several hours.
The men, Yassim Muhhidin Aref, 34 yr, Imam of the Majid Al Salam mosque; and Mohammed Mosharref Hoosain, 49, founder of the mosque, are suspected of ties to the terrorist group Ansar al-Islam, CBS News National Security Correspondent David Martin reports.
The arrests were the result of a long-running FBI operation. The arrests may have been ordered because one of the men purchased a plane ticket. There was not report of any link to the current U.S. terror alert.
The men allegedly sought help from a confidential informant and were attempting to launder money to purchase shoulder-launching missiles.
An FBI spokesman said a press conference was tentatively set Thursday afternoon in Washington.
Some mosque members held morning prayers Thursday on a nearby sidewalk.
Shoulder fired missiles? They were going to try and pull a Mombasa here in the US. Whats more is that they were using the mosque as cover. Its time to treat all mosques as enemy outlets..

I could not agree more. As a first step, the USA should pull the Federal tax exemption granted to Islam, which means not only that they have to pay federal taxes but that the country no longer acknowledges "the religion of peace" as a bona fide religion. We should then zero in on every mosque in the country, raiding when we can and filing RICO charges when we must.
But, but, Muslims are peaceful and Islam is a religion of peace!
At least that's what many bozos around here (and all lefties and media types) believe...

It has long been time for 24/7/52 surveillance of every mosque in the USA. We need to start organizing local militias to share the duty and equipment; not everyone has a video camera, the primary weapon.

I'd guess that while the Mosque raid was going on, a second raid was happening at their residences. Thank God for the Patriot Act and Ashcroft's view of reality and Bush's full confidence in him.
Agree. Also, why don't we have all mosques audited very carefully to see where the money is going. I don't know why we are not doing that either.
2) Second of all, this is ALBANY we're talking about, a town with a GOP Senate and a Republican Governor with national ambitions. Clearly there's an "agenda" at work here.
3) No doubt as the late-August NYC GOP convention approaches, we'll see more and more of these law enforcement/terror photo ops conveniently staged increasingly close to the NYC media market -- perhaps Kingston, then Yonkers, THEN the Big Apple itself.
4) Finally, driving the pious literally into the street to pray sends a chilling message to people of all faiths about Ashcroft's jackbooted agenda.

Let's hope their residences were raided, as well as their places of business.
Follow the money trail.
Do you think this is the first raid on a Mosque? Do you think seeking shoulder fired missiles is a fantasy? Do you not understand that the drive to kill President Bush is probably the number one aim of the terrorists, right up there with bringing down our financial institutions in order to creat national chaos, panic and most of all, FEAR?
Do you think ANY big name democrats will be anywhere within a one hundred mile radius of NY or DC during the Republican convention?

I'm beginning to feel like these terrorist arrests are like a giant game of Whack-A-Mole. For every one we arrest, several more pop up.
I’m with you on that. It’s time to face facts about this false religion and tear down the façade that they hide behind. They declared a holy war not us, so let’s fight them with a holy war mentality too and consider their mosques as fortresses.
