But I am of the sort that believes that most elections are winnable if the right sort of campaign is run.
A state that elected Dick Durbin will NOT elect Alan Keyes, especially after he tells the voters that most of them are moral reprobates.
The spin will paint Keyes as mean.
Keyes would win in a fair fight. Unfortunately, Illinois and media bias wins it for Obama.

Agreed completely. Also, Keyes tends to be a one-trick pony, anti-abortion, which won't play well in Chicago. He debates well, but he always ends up back on his single issue which scares off a lot of people - all the democrats and enough republicans to make a big difference.
Where have I said that I think he would lose? For all I know about Illinois politics, he may well be able to win.
If Keyes would expose Obamas voting record and talk ISSUES, I think he could inspire people to register AND vote.
You're right that there are differences in the situation, but the Dick Cheney residency thing has some similarities. Cheney didn't set out to become the GOP VP, he was picked after it was clear the other names he and Bush looked at wouldn't do. He had to do some maneuvering in residency to qualify under the Constitution for a position he hadn't previously sought for, but it was legal and ethical.
Same with Keyes. He didn't seek this position (and therefore isn't a carpetbagger), and he has to change his residency to qualify under the Constitution. The Illinois GOP picked him. In November, Illinois voters will decide whether he represents their state more or less than Obama.
Ryan would have gotten blown out too.
Some races you can win - and some you can't. This race is one that the GOP can't - short of a novel candidate like DIT-KA!
Alan Keyes is an excellent choice as a candidate; his conservative principals are beyond approach, and if I lived in Illinois he'd have my vote...
Having said that, and having the deepest respect fo Mr. Keyes, Illinois is the midwest bastion of liberalism... Dick Durbin; what a joke... The arrogant ass*ole... If I'd of ever lived in Illinois I would have moved away as soon as I could have seen my shoelaces...

A valid point. But there is a distinction, however fine, between being drafted into an extraordinary situation of need, and arrogantly inserting yourself into a state which has no need of you to win the seat or represent your views.
It is the Constitution that defines qualifications for national office, not state laws.
But I'm with you. Let's have at it.
